Argentina annuls marriage of gay couple

A federal judge annuled the marriage of two gay men that took place in Buenos Aires last week, according to the Catholic News Agency; but gay marriage bills are still moving ahead in Argentina.
Judge Felix Gustavo de Igarzabal of Buenos Aires ruled that marriage is defined by being between a man and a woman – and since both parties were men, no marriage took place. This reversed an earlier decision allowing two gay men to marry at the city’s civil registry office on March 3.
The Argentine congress is currently considering two bills that would legalize marriage equality. Some polls have shown that up to 70 percent of Argentinians support gay marriage. The Argentine Supreme Court is also currently hearing two cases on gay marriage. The Justice Minister is on record as favoring a gender neutral marriage law, as is former president Nestor Kirchner.
Two men were legally wed in the province of Tierra del Fuego in December, after the governor ordered the civil registry office to perform and register their marriage. Cohabitating same-sex couples have the right to collect the pensions of their deceased partners in Argentina and gay prisoners can receive conjugal visits. Civil unions are recognized in four jurisdictions in Argentina, including Buenos Aires.

And the end of the grip on the minds of people by the most oppressive monster in the western world. The CAtholic church.

BTw, Mexico city has marriage, and Mexico’s Cohuila state has civil unions.

Columbia grants marriage rights under common law.

      Uraguay has civil unions.

Brazil is similar to Argentina – partial rights all over the country, and more rights in certain areas of both countries

    • Societies appear to be changing a bit at a time in this part and that of the world.

Still waiting to hear from Nepal that marriage equality is finally legally in effect and in force in that part of Asia.

      Let’s see what 2010 brings.

    • I’m sorry to hear about what happened to this couple. Testimony from the Prop 8 trial (as well as simple common sense) tells us how wrenching that can be, to have your marriage taken away from you.

However, there is light on the horizon, and it will not be long before these men will be called husbands again.

    • Well at least Argentina is more socially progressive than the “new third world” country called the United States of America!

    • I don’t agree with insuling my country but my state is the first in the country to legalize gay marriage and we have come a long we in only a period of about 6 years since the first equal marriage state my state of Massachusetts. I was originally fooled into thinking of California as the best progressive state but when I found out in december of 2003 that gay marriage may soon be legalized as soon as may 20th of 2004, my eyes were glued to NECN for the longest time every time the house of representatives were arguing over our supreme court decision. It’s 2010 now and Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and even DC as well as Iowa allows for equal marriage rights! Rhode Island and New York at least rcognize marriages performed elsewhere and many other locations have some kind of recognition of same sex couples. Could one even say that in the 90? I believe we will have gay marriage by at the very least 2014 nationwide and my apologies to those who may be deceased before they get there chance on behalf of the slow pace of this important future that involves true Liberty and Justice for all. I believe in the future of our world and hopefully more people will have a good reason to feel the same way. For anybody reading from my birth city Springfield Mass, I do plan on becoming mayor of our beautiful city full of so much potential. WATCH ME WIN!!!
