Anti-gay group’s forum sells ‘Obama Waffles’ with racial stereotype

(Washington) Activists at a conservative political forum on the weekend were snapping up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.
The product, Obama Waffles, was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.
While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama’s politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the image of the classic pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.
Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.
On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for “Open Border Fiesta Waffles” that says it can serve “4 or more illegal aliens.” The recipe includes a tip: “While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?”
The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama’s wife, Michelle, and Obama’s former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
The Obama campaign declined to comment.
Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: “We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman’s Own or Emeril’s – there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we’ve taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes.”
The socially conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the summit. Both have long histories opposing LGBT civil rights.

Hi Morgan. Do you really think “Mr. Seperate but Equal” Obama will “usher in an era of respect and inclusion for all americans” and not just the Aholes (like him who think marriage is between a man & a woman because of some judeo-christian book of – pardon the pun – fairy tales or another one written by some child molesting camel jockey that enslaves women?). I think he’ll do whatever is good for Obie Wan. Instead of the usual washington corruption we’ll have the chicago Monty Hall lets make a deal thats good for me corruption that will make the beltway boys look like rubes at the carnival! They’re saying they will revist “Don’t Ask. Don’t Tell” only because they need our votes. If they win, we’ll have another ten years of the same old discrimination under another name. In this election(as in all others) gay people have to decide which stinks worse – Donkey dung or Elephant dung, We already know which one produces the most!
Even though it is delusional to expect your candidate running for any office in the land to not hit by satire or just plain stupidity reaking with bad taste,
this is “just plain way over the top” and of course blatantly racist.
The smug sense of righteousness plus the call to to what many now would deem extremism, the call to come “out of the mountains and caves” and “go like the warriors of ancient times moving solidly packed together with heavy door-sized shields and spiked shoes so as not to be toppled by the weight of the shields” as in the days of ancient warfare, all metaphors for waging relentless cultural war and never, ever retreating. I could see in film clips of The Whose Family are You Researching Council as I call the antigay “terrorist” group also known as the “Family” “Research” “Council”. One of their stars speaker was Star Parker, full of the old African American disdain for gays and lesbians (lesbians who she thought should not treated by doctors if it violated their personal and religious beliefs to treat them)
Even though I am a gay Christian, I most certainly don’t think personal and religious belief give you the right or legitimacy to violate the oath you took as a new physician “to do no harm” in your medical practice.
But back to the Obama Waffles, while there is no requirement to not do satire of a presidential candidate whose vision for this office you mightliy loath and disdain, that doesn’t mean you have to stoop to all-time lows if you feel the need to ridicule him or her. Sure have your satire and ridicule, but do you have to be a racist pig in the process?
But then, no low is too low for a group absolutely committed to daily spiritual violence against GLBTs in its drive to “take back America”.
We need to unite behind Obama and to bring usher in a day of respect and inclusion for all Americans and not just for some.
Snend the sickos behind this to Saudi Arabia with their bibles. There, they will be on the other end of religious based hatred. Complete with the Saudi’s Sword swinger, who works on commission. And what is the equivalent of the supreme court there is packed with our own types of sickos. Just a variant.
…Not to mention the top-flap of the box which has the caricature of Obama wearing a Muslim Turban.
This is from the Family Research Council and the Focus on Family group. They created it. And we all know what they’re responsible for: Love Won Out! Anti-gay seminars.
Is anyone surprised by the filth this group peddles?
This is the post-racial age I’ve been hearing so much about. Now I get it.
“So we’ve taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes.”
Who are they kidding? It was, without any question, a clear racial shot across Obama’s bow. Cheap, taudry and, as is usually the case, low brow. “Newman’s Own” and “Emirile’s” packaging are not so radically characatured and they know it. Typical Rethuglican and “christian” race baiting.
