Anti-gay group calls for Pepsi boycott

(New York City) The conservative social action group American Family Association has made Pepsi Cola the latest target in its ongoing boycotts of what it calls “pro-homosexual” companies.

The AFA, in an Action Alert to its more than two-million members, urges supporters to sign an online pledge to boycott Pepsi products and to call the company to tell it “to stop promoting the homosexual agenda.”

“PepsiCo has refused a request by AFA to remain neutral in the culture war,” the Action Alert said.

“In the last two years, Pepsi has given $500,000 to the Human Rights Campaign and $500,000 to the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The $1,000,000 was to be used to help promote homosexuality in the workplace,” the AFA said.

“Pepsi refuses to give money to any pro-family organization that opposes the homosexual agenda. Plus, every homosexual organization we know of is overwhelmingly pro-abortion,” according to the Action Alert.

Previous AFA boycotts have had impact on companies, although the group has had some success.

In October it ended a boycott of McDonald’s after the fast-food giant agreed to end its support for the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.  In addition, a company employee to was appointed to chamber’s board of directors resigned.

McDonald’s incurred the wrath of the AFA after it made a $20,000 donation to the chamber, and Richard Ellis, who until September was vice president of communications for the chain was named to the chamber’s board of directors. The company said Ellis resigned after moving to McDonald’s Canadian operation.

The AFA previously boycotted Disney for several year’s over its support for Gay Days at Disney World, although the company was not an official sponsor of the event.

It boycotted Cincinnati-based Proctor and Gamble over the company’s support for the repeal of a city charter amendment that prevented Cincinnati city council from enacting any laws that would recognize gays and lesbians.

The group boycotted Kraft for its support of the Chicago Gay Games and threatened to boycott Wal-Mart over its involvement with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

An AFA boycott of Ford was heralded as a success by the organization which noted that it had resulted in a drop in sales and share value.  But most financial analysts said that Ford’s problems were really the result of vehicle designs that failed to impress the public. Ford was the only carmaker of the Detroit big three to decline a federal bailout.

The conservative Christian group launched its nationwide boycott of Ford in 2005 over the automaker’s support for LGBT issues, briefly put it on hold and then reinstated it.

The AFA claimed victory when Ford began pulling its ads from LGBT publications, but industry observers and the company said the ad pullout was part of a downsizing of expenses.

    • Has AFA preyed on American Airlines with their “hate-oric?” Or, do they pick and choose depending on how much money companies are losing by the week?

    • RoneE – Well, they’ve been boycotting intelligence for quite some time, so there is room for hope… :)

    • The AFA sounds like a group pf bullies not a family values group. Hooray for those companies who continue to support all families whatever the make up. Thank you for your support of equality, open mindedness and change to a healthier stronger more united and loving world for all of us to live.
      Respectfully and with gratitude

    • As more and more American companies like Pepsi and Campbell’s realize that it is not in their best business interests to avoid potentially lucrative markets, the power of groups like the AFA will diminish. Caving to these kinds of groups only empowers them to continue anyway – and what are they going to do – boycott everything? They are a vocal fringe group, and should be treated as such. American society is slowly maturing and coming to grips with the diversity taht exists within the realm of human sexuality. Conservative groups attempt to persuade people that this destructive to previously held standards because they are simply too ignorant to understand the power inherent in diversity.

    • Wayne – The truth and conservative Christianity have precious little in common. Lies, intentional deception and misinformation are their tools of choice. Unfortauntely for them, eventually, the truth comes out and their true colors, sad as they are, come to light.

    • Reading the website of the so-called “American Family Association, I cannot help but notice many of their comments about LGBT people are false. Since they claim to be a Christian organization, one wonders why they are not familiar with Exodus 20:16– or do they feel the commandment against lying is not longer valid.

    • time to make sure that the next time I buy my bi-weekly liters of diet Pepsi/coke – that I buy more…

    • Yay! Another reason to continue buying Pepsi. How ironic that Pepsi, founded in North Carolina, gets boycotted the same year NC votes in a Democrat for president. The two have nothing to do with each other, but it shows that maybe the real world is slowly moving in to the south.

Pebble….what is the addy to Pepsi so we can thank them for their support?

    • I’m a member of AFA so that, whenever they come up with one of their BS boycots, I can get the e-addy of the company involved and can write to them and thank them for their support.

    • So, it looks like the AFA is supportive to all of the rights of Americans, huh? The AFA or religious rights or whatever you want to be called, is so “pro-family” that when a church member comes to their preachers that they might be gay, they say to repent. No one, has ever chosen to be gay, and when the RR tell us that we are sinful, should we go and commit suicide then??? NO, because that is a sin too!!! So we are supposed to live in exile, and never congregate to people we may have attractions to, WOW!! what a great way to live. NOT

    • It’s so nice to know that the AFA has solved all the other myriad problems surrounding marriage – like, say, the 60% divorce rate for first-time marriages, and 40% for second-timers – as well as issues such as teen pregnancy and drug abuse that they can spend so much freaking time worrying about a group that they *claim* is only 2% of the population.
