Anti-gay group calls for Pepsi boycott

(New York City) The conservative social action group American Family Association has made Pepsi Cola the latest target in its ongoing boycotts of what it calls “pro-homosexual” companies.
The AFA, in an Action Alert to its more than two-million members, urges supporters to sign an online pledge to boycott Pepsi products and to call the company to tell it “to stop promoting the homosexual agenda.”“PepsiCo has refused a request by AFA to remain neutral in the culture war,” the Action Alert said.
“In the last two years, Pepsi has given $500,000 to the Human Rights Campaign and $500,000 to the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The $1,000,000 was to be used to help promote homosexuality in the workplace,” the AFA said.
“Pepsi refuses to give money to any pro-family organization that opposes the homosexual agenda. Plus, every homosexual organization we know of is overwhelmingly pro-abortion,” according to the Action Alert.
Previous AFA boycotts have had impact on companies, although the group has had some success.
In October it ended a boycott of McDonald’s after the fast-food giant agreed to end its support for the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. In addition, a company employee to was appointed to chamber’s board of directors resigned.
McDonald’s incurred the wrath of the AFA after it made a $20,000 donation to the chamber, and Richard Ellis, who until September was vice president of communications for the chain was named to the chamber’s board of directors. The company said Ellis resigned after moving to McDonald’s Canadian operation.
The AFA previously boycotted Disney for several year’s over its support for Gay Days at Disney World, although the company was not an official sponsor of the event.
It boycotted Cincinnati-based Proctor and Gamble over the company’s support for the repeal of a city charter amendment that prevented Cincinnati city council from enacting any laws that would recognize gays and lesbians.
The group boycotted Kraft for its support of the Chicago Gay Games and threatened to boycott Wal-Mart over its involvement with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
An AFA boycott of Ford was heralded as a success by the organization which noted that it had resulted in a drop in sales and share value. But most financial analysts said that Ford’s problems were really the result of vehicle designs that failed to impress the public. Ford was the only carmaker of the Detroit big three to decline a federal bailout.
The conservative Christian group launched its nationwide boycott of Ford in 2005 over the automaker’s support for LGBT issues, briefly put it on hold and then reinstated it.
The AFA claimed victory when Ford began pulling its ads from LGBT publications, but industry observers and the company said the ad pullout was part of a downsizing of expenses.

What continually astounds me is that we have way more than 2 million gays in the US alone. I don’t understand why the big gay organizations don’t mobilize the gay community more to sign petitions, call companies, legislatures etc. HRC was absolutely invisible in the protests that occurred after Prop 8 (despite how much the HRC pats themselves on the back I don’t see anything visible from them)- so new groups like Join the impact have popped up, but their current petition drive is so not user friendly - why is it that the gay community cannot be mobile, cohesive and active in voicing our support of companies like Pepsi or in the political front. We are continually out voiced by hate groups such as the AFA - and with all the money we give I just don’t understand this at all.
Hang in there Pepsi, don’t these cowards tell you how to advertise or decide who and how to to support.
We should all write letters of support to Pepsi and buy their products.
But bloodshed and violence?? for selling Pepsi to everone? Read what writer John R Mallernne says on the WND about this:
it is shown in this report on G-A-Y:

Simple, McDonald’s and Pepsi are junk food and junk drinks. Let AFA get fat and sick on those greasy, salty and sugary foods and drinks. gay people who are looking to improve their health should not consume those kind of things.
I love how they throw in there that “Plus, every homosexual organization we know of is overwhelmingly pro-abortion!” it reminds me of a line from Futurama-when the commander couldn’t convince his men to fight a war against a non-threatening people, he added “Plus they said you guys look like dorks!”
Thanks Pepsi! Sorry but I hate soda or
I would go out to buy a case or two!
if every company was pro gay then the christian crazies would all starve to death-since they wouldn t support any that supported us. what a no-brainer,eh?
Interesting choice for the religious right to boycott Pepsi, especially considering the fact that the LDS church is a major shareholder in that company. I thought they were all friends now?
This just baffles me…there is an article on this site about Prop 8 Donors who want their names to be kept secret because they fear boycotts of their businesses, etc. Gee, is that not what AFA is doing…what’s the difference? And so what if they boycott — it’s also time that we as LGBT people also took a stand — buy some pepsi…and show our support for those that support us!
Now I will drink even more diet pepsi than I did before.
AFA needs to grow up and recognize there are far bigger ‘problems’ out there than ‘promoting the gay agenda’. Boycotting just for their simple narrow-mindedness, just because THEY can’t crawl out of the dark ages, is only going to hurt the economy even further. Grow up and get a life, AFA.
Where do we sign up!

and thank them for supporting diversity and gay charities.
I did yesterday and the following was the response I received back within a few hours:
Dear Larry,
Thank you for contacting us at PepsiCo and for sharing your thoughts. As a company, we made a commitment to promote and support diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our business. We’re proud of the success we’ve had in attracting some of the best and the brightest from around the world and in building a workforce that is truly reflective of the consumers we serve. In 2008, the PepsiCo Foundation awarded a grant to Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) to help create and launch a national program specifically designed for workplace environments. The initiative seeks to promote further understanding and equality in the places where people spend much of their time—at work. At PepsiCo, diversity and inclusion are among the values we have adopted for ourselves in the workplace because we see them as important to our viability and success—as individual employees and as a company. And we believe strongly that these values will enhance other businesses and work environments as well. Thanks for allowing us to share this information with you.

If we get any more companies to sponsor gay events, the right wing nuts may just boycott themselves into starvation, Amen.
