Anti-gay group blasts Log Cabin leader

(Washington) The conservative Americans for Truth About Homosexuality is demanding the Republican Party reprimand Jamie Ensley, the president of the Georgia Log Cabin Republicans for calling the AFTAH a “radical Christian domestic terrorist group” and comparing it to Nazis.
Ensley made the remarks in a letter to Michael Steele, the new Chair of the Republican Party, urging him to ignore an AFTAH call to abandon his belief the GOP needs to be a “big tent” that includes gays. After its trouncing at the polls in November, the party has been searching for a new beginning. Steele has said the GOP needs to have a broader base.
In a February 12 letter to Steele, AFTAH president Peter LaBarbera said the party needs to concentrate on its “grassroots pro-family conservative GOP base.”
AFTAH on its Web site said it “is encouraging Republicans and pro-family citizens nationwide to contact Steele and the RNC to urge them not to sell out the conservative GOP platform by courting an organization [Log Cabin Republicans] that works to undermine tradition marriage and supports anti-religious, pro-homosexual special-rights legislation.”
Ensley’s response to Steele drew more wrath from from LaBarbera.
“I would expect an apology from the Republican Party of Georgia,” LaBarbera said. “And actually I would hope that the Republican Party of Georgia would issue some [sort of] formal statement or take some formal action against Mr. Ensley.”
So far, Steele has not commented on either LaBarbera’s or Ensley’s remarks.
In addition to being the head of the Georgia Log Cabin Republicans, Ensley is the Chair of the 57th District of the Fulton County Republican Party and a board member of Georgia Equality.

“Conservatism has nothing to do with being anti-gay, anti-environment or greedy. Conservatism has everything to do with personal responsibility and for less government intrusion.”
Trace, funny how north of the 49th parallel here it seems that what the good ole GOP stands for is anti-gay, anti-environment, and pro-war. I understand in politics that perception is everything!
Shawn, I am a conservative.
I am not self hating, guilt ridden and am completely out about who I am (to Everyone). I certainly hope that you can say the same before throwing stones.
As far as comparing conservatives and Republicans, they are two very separate things. The sad thing is that many of the people that had ruined the Republican Party are now claiming the name “Conservative.” That is unfortunate.
Now I could never see calling myself a Democrat as I do not believe in the Socialist bent that this fine party has taken. I work far to hard for the money that I make and wish to choose who I give those earnings to. It is not the governments job to redistribute my money. I also do not want the government intruding on my personal affairs.
Thus, I am a Proud Libertarian.
trace sounds like the typical self hating guilt ridden closet case conservative! If it’s not the breainless herd of breeders s*itting all over us it’s the equally brainless herd of Haggard clones! Yet, we WILL prevail. We WILL shape human society and create a world for US! One in which we SHALL be the majority!
Well Trace, the GOP has certainly done a good job at redefining conservatism
Actually, the Religious Right, or Conservatives, if you wish, are the equivalent of the American Taliban. Trace said “Conservatism has everything to do with personal responsibity and for less government intrusion” Really? Have you seen any personal responsibility by the conservatives the past eight years? Less government intrusion? How about all of the anti-gay issues they are pushing? For instance, laws against gays adopting? That’s less government intrusion? Hardly! How about the Conservatives that back legislation like Californa’s Prop 8?
Good grief! Do you look at anything you send out? I’ve never seen so many typos and misspellings.
It doesn’t make any sense for gay people to be republicans because the republican party needs the religious base to survive. If the log cabin group doesn’t mesh with the democrats, they should throw their support to the libertarian party instead of helping the religious who will never accept them. Libertarians are true conservatives.
Wouldn’t be funny if someone was to start a group call “Truth About Heterosexuality”. It could call attention to half of all heterosexual marriage fail. It could call the attention how Heterosexuals sneak around and have sex in other married people bed room, have unwed sex in the back of cars in dark places, and forces other people to watch their heavy petting and French kissing in public and religious high schools. Plus, leave their used condoms in groceries stores parking lots, churches parking lots, and school parking lots, and on top of that they will leave their used condoms on neighborhood road were children play, where good family stroll for their exercise. The “Truth About Heterosexuality” could call attention to how married heterosexuals use children against the other partner to get back at perceived wrongs. The “Truth About Heterosexuality” could call attention to how they screw up their children’s lives by the digs against their ex-mate and other sick behavior, and then parade that sick depravity on Oprah or Doctor Phill. The “Truth About Heterosexuality” could call attention to how they are physical violence toward each other and their children, where American Hospitals and DSHS has to step in and referee at tax payer expense. How they refuse to be honest about sexuality to the point their children believe in Saddlebacking. We even have an example of a Governor not believing in teaching human sexuality to her daughter, to the point the daughter did not use proper contraceptives and got pregnant. I bet you didn’t know you had such sick individuals in your neighbor hood. Hmmm…. Sounds like a We need “Americans telling the Truth About Heterosexuality”.
Every once in a while,, Log Cabin Republicans do far far far more than Stonewall Democrats. When was the last time, a gay Democrat called Obama’s homophobic legion of black church lemmings the terrorists that they are for voting Prop 8?!?!?!
Conservatism has nothing to do with being anti-gay, anti-environment or greedy.
Conservatism has everything to do with personal responsibility and for less government intrusion.
the more conservative the GOP is, the more antigay, the more anti-environment and more pro-greed it is.
Very encouraging to see Mr. Ensley getting press about this. Maybe the Log Cabin folk are making a good difference.
Keep up the good fight Mr. Ensley.
Ensley is so correct, hit the nail on the head, these right-wingnut groups are our own, homegrown, fundamentalist terrorists. I also believe that something is so very, basically wrong when one person uses religion to stay so focused on the sex lives of other people. As a straight, southern, middle age activist, we always had to watch out for the preacher’s son and sometimes the preacher. What is sad, I clicked on the activism spot under stories and found only 8 and they spread over several months. Surely there has been more action than that to report on.
Congratulations to Mr. Ensley! It is good to see some Republican leaders awakening to the current century and realizing bigotry isn’t going to win the party any elections. It is a time long overdue when the Republican Party needs to stop catering to these extremist groups and their constant messages of prejudice and hatred. It doesn’t work—anyone who doubts it should examine last fall’s North Carolina US Senate race.
Sometimes one has to just sit back, light up, and laugh one’s posterior off at the antics of Log Outhouse closet cases … not to mention the Kristianist Reich (sic).
