Al Franken wins Senate seat

(St. Paul, Minn.) A Minnesota board has certified results showing Democrat Al Franken winning the state’s U.S. Senate recount over Republican Norm Coleman, but a legal challenge probably will keep the race in limbo.

The Canvassing Board’s declaration Monday starts a seven-day clock for Coleman to file a lawsuit protesting the result. If he doesn’t, Franken will get the election certificate he needs to take the seat in Washington.

Franken, a former “Saturday Night Live” personality, ended the recount up by 225 votes.

Coleman’s lawyers have argued that some ballots were mishandled and others were wrongly excluded from the recount. After a Minnesota Supreme Court decision went against Coleman earlier Monday, lead attorney Fritz Knaak (kuh-NOCK’) said a lawsuit was inevitable.

    • Well, this is good news for Caroline Kennedy. With Frankin selected she will no longer be the least qualified member of the Senate.

    • The voters fail again. We do not need any more Democrats in the Senate increasing government’s power.

    • Have you ever heard Al Franken speak about his political positions? He’s a smart guy who is every bit as qualified as most of the douchebags in Washington. We have had lots of trouble with career politicians. Why not someone who has intelligence and character? We shouldn’t think he’s incapable, just because he was on television. Remember Reagan, Bono, Eastwood, Schwartzenegger?

    • Al Franken…Funny, intelligent, articulate…He is exactly what Minnesota needs….wish he had been a florida resident, I would have voted for him. The Republicans have driven the country into the right-wing gutter…let’s all hope the Democrats have the intestinal fortitude to get real and fix the country.

    • Hello John?? If you’ve been paying any attention at all in the last 8 years..the republicans have increased federal/executive power more than any administration in history, and desroyed your constitutional rights in the process. • Instead of challenging every electoral result with lame lawsuits and a sour grapes attitude, the Republicans should be pleased that they’re back in opposition. Being in opposition is easy. You just sit there and let the ruling party destroy itself.

The more Democrats are elected to Congress this year, the more they can’t shift the blame to somebody else when the Barack, Nancy, and Harry “Axis of Hope” crashes and burn. Expectations for this Obama administration and 111th Congress are impossibly high. It is unlikely they’ll be able to keep everyone happy.

    • Congratulations to the voters of Minnesota for making the right choice. Al Franken, despite what you may think if you only know him as a comedian, is someone who really knows the issues for his state, and for the nation. And he comes to every issue thinking about how it will affect real lives. I only wish my own representatives were as thoughtful.

    • I’ll bet Bush and his adminstration use this is an excuse that they were not anti-gay while in office.

    • I’m surprised to see people here complaining about Franken winning, and hoping that Barack fails.

I think they are nothing but repugnicans, members of our own Kristian Taliban, who with Bush took a page out of hitlers Mein Kampf, using religious hatred (in that case against the Jews) to gain power. And here their goal is to split the gay community. They are the haters, the representatives of ignorance, hatred in the name of God, winner take all, let the middle class starve “Bushies”. Ignore them, to hell with them. Maybe God will somehow remove them from this country.

*Bushies – let the legacy of GWB be that his name becomes representative of all the known profanities in the world. A fitting tribute to the fact that when he was born, something else happened as it can happen sometimes, and they threw away the child by mistake.

    • Trace: Yes and “qualified” republicans have done so well these past 8 years? It is about time someone smart, funny, and new showed up. Now if we could just get someone like that to run in AZ…
