Hey Bud Burgoon-Clark, I’ve lived all over SD County for forty years and have never seen a gun rack. My partner and I lived in Mission Valley for nine years and have been in Otay Ranch for nearly eight and have not experienced homophobia directed at us in either community.

Two weeks ago I was walking from my car to the office and I passed a property-for-rent sign that had been vandalized with this gem: “NO FAGS OR DIKE.” It was at the corner of Monroe & North avenues, one block from the GLT office in University Heights.

1st: KUDOS to the parents and ESPICALLY to Natalie. I do hope she’ll get to read her report IN FRONT of her class.

I just sent an email to the Principal and Superintendent of the Mt. Woodson elementary school in the Ramona USD. EVERYONE here should do the same.

Part of their ‘CORE BELIEFS in Support of a 21st Century Education’ states:

“CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY
We believe that students thrive in a culture that supports the constitutional, patriotic foundations and religious freedoms of our democratic American society and promotes high, ethical standards of integrity, honesty, kindness, equality, and respect for all.”
…. “equality, and respect for all.” REALLY … ?

I also mentioned in my email had another 6th grader done his/her report on Martin Luther King or Caesar Chaves nobody .. NOBODY would have said a THING!! Just shows the work we all STILL HAVE to continue!! Oh and I think I may have called them Scarred Cat Bullies …

By that same reasoning, any report based on a heteroSEXual is also sex related, requiring censorship. Why not just cancel school to prevent any exposure to the world?

A previous writer is exactly correct when saying that Ramona is an enclave of extremists of all types. In particular , I commend the statements by Thomas. Do not be complacent , after small gains.The tactics of the religious right defy any concept of honesty, respect and integrity. One of the more important items on the side of America’s LGBT citizenry is the enormous money power , as revealed a couple of years ago , when PFLAG leaders were invited to ring the closing bell at the NY Stock Exchange. I am an expert in nothing, but I’d suggest using that clout , along with the usual countering of lies and innuendo from the ‘right’. It made a significant difference in Canada , where we were faced with the same oppositional groups who were assisted in various ways , by US groups with a common hateful perspective. But it takes involvement at any level. You have a PC. Write your elected representatives ( following correct protocol)and remind them that you vote, pay taxes and have purchasing power. And do it often.
I’d also like to express my deep admiration for the parents of Matthew Shepard for their continuing campaign for human dignity on behalf of their son. Karamie , and Wyoming are forever branded as examples , on into the 21st century of primitive ideologies and selective justice.

I don’t see the wisdom in trading one foolish bigotry for another. NRA membership is now to be conflated with homophobia?

Not in my house, it ain’t. And while I get the attempt at humor, the “fake gun in the gun-rack” idea is not recommended. Most knowledgeable people will tell you that brandishing even a real firearm that you’re not planning to use is not a good idea. A fake one? Joke, yes?

The civil-rights movement has always involved armed conflict. For your penance, read up on the Deacons for Defense, and then surf to pinkpistolsdotorg and educate yourself: “Armed gays don’t get bashed.”

And lest I forget–right on, Natalie; your bravery and perseverance are respected.

How bizarre. It was a school assignment. Reminds me of a German movie, “The Nasty Girl.” In the movie (true story), students had an assignment to write about their town during the Third Reich (it was a high school class). School assignment. So this one girl writes her paper and gets the whole town in an uproar. It was bad enough that she not only left the town, but she eventually immigrated to the US.

What kind of school district allows a sixth-grader to be demonized for doing their assigned schoolwork? I’d say one filled with people who are bigoted, incompetent, or both. Nobody knows what’ll be cut next in California schools, and THIS is how the Ramona district spends taxpayer money??
