Southern Baptists organize get-out-the-vote rally

(Washington) Southern Baptists are organizing a nationwide prayer campaign to accompany their values-voter registration drive, seeking spiritual renewal for families and churches, and God’s favor for public officials who are guided by the Bible.

The 40/40 Prayer Vigil for Spiritual Revival and National Renewal will run from Sept. 24 through Nov. 2, two days before the general election.

The daily prayers include requests for God’s guidance in voting, for the election of more “godly Christians,” for God to “help churches find ways to help Christians get to the polls” and for public officials to be protected “from the attacks of Satan.”

The effort is a companion program to the iVoteValues registration campaign, which began in 2004 and is jointly led this year by Southern Baptists, the largest Protestant group in the country, and the Family Research Council, a conservative Washington-based advocacy group.

Surveys have found that the majority of white evangelicals support the presumed Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain, but with less enthusiasm than they had for previous GOP candidates for the White House. Sen. Barack Obama, who will accept the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday in Denver, has been aggressively reaching out to religious voters.

The Rev. Richard Land, head of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, the public policy arm of the 16.3 million-member Southern Baptist Convention, said Tuesday that more than 1,300 churches have signed up for the prayer campaign so far.

The drive is being promoted by the Southern Baptists’ North American Mission Board, through ilivevalues.com and conference calls with pastors. Land hopes that an upcoming promotional DVD can be shown at state Baptist meetings across the country this fall.

“Our vision statement is an American society that affirms and practices Judeo-Christian values rooted in biblical authority,” Land said. “America will be better off if people who are voting are seeking God’s guidance.”

    • When will they start taxing these organizations? Organized religion clearly functions as a PAC, yet they remain exempt.

    • What’s that smell in the air? Fear. Loss of Power! Goodbye to their tactics of terror against these great states of the US.

The only Value Vote they have ever delivered is the Value of HATE.

To ‘protect’ us against the ills of satan, they can start by looking in the mirror, then staying home on election day.

Religious Leaders and their kool-aid drinking masses HAD their chance.

      They proved themselves corrupt.

      Time for Change.

    • I would like to see on all sides of the political spectrum instead of get out the vote campaigns educate the votes campaigns. It sickens me to know that people that have not read either their state or federal constitutions are voting. Ignorant voters are bad for the Republic and it shows in governmental policies and not just the policies of the Bush administration either.

People should have to take a constitutional test in order to be able to vote.

    • Southern Baptists have added nothing of “value” to American society. Their divisive rhetoric only increases tension and creates problems. God most certainly has nothing to do with this truly disturbed bunch of people.

    • Ya know, for a buncha people that were told to be IN the world but not OF the world, they’re sure taking a vested interest in things.

I don’t recall their saviour suggesting people get “saved” and then get involved in politics to change the world on his/her/its behalf.

They’re just supposed to be a “light” and let that thar Holy Ghost fellow do the rest.

      So much for fundamental teaching.

    • Isn’t it wonderful to see a tolerant group of people who believe in others right to free speech and all the freedoms including freedom of religion and the freedom to vote one’s passion even if it is based on one’s religious beliefs…. Isn’t it ironic that some people while pointing out the judgement of others become as ugly as the people they are pointing at….
