Crist voices support for anti-gay Fla. amendment

(Tallahassee, Fla.) Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has thrown his support behind a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriage.
The Republican governor, who is said to be on Jon McCain’s shortlist for a running mate, used a stop to promote another proposed amendment, that would cut property taxes by an average of 25 percent for all property owners in the state, to voice his support for the marriage amendment.Although Crist was one of those who signed petitions that led to the proposed amendment being accepted for the November ballot, the governor said this was the first time he has publicly called for voters to support it.
The amendment says, “Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.”
During the 2006 gubernatorial campaign, independent candidate Max Linn, during an appearance on a radio talk show, said it is common knowledge in Tallahassee that Crist is gay.
“Charlie come out, come out from wherever you are,” Linn said during an interview on WFTL.
Crist has disputed constant rumors over his sexuality.
After speculation began over his possible naming as McCain’s running mate, Crist announced his engagement to Carole Rome.
Florida already has a law limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples, but supporters of the amendment fear it could be overturned in court.
Meanwhile, in California, which also will have a proposed amendment on the November ballot that would bar same-sex marriage the Roman Catholic Church has begun a campaign to support the measure.
The California Bishops Conference has issued a statement encouraging church members to “to provide both the financial support and the volunteer efforts needed for the passage of Proposition 8.”
The bishops also said they are developing materials for parish priests to use in their churches to support the proposed amendment.
California is one of only two states where same-sex marriage is legal. The other is Massachusetts.

If the RC Church is helping to get proposition 8 through in November, then we should be calling for their tax-exempt status to be removed. No religious denomination is supposed to be meddling in the affairs of state and if they are, they should suffer the consequences. Hit them where it hurts most, in their pockets, the bigots.
What would you expect from a republican governor, whose party has sold it’s soul to the devil of hate.
Ultimately the republican party will be destroyed by it’s own criminal acts, but how do we obtain redress for all those who suffered at its hands.
They have become little better in some quarters then religious nazis, a mentality similar to what gave us 9/11.
And this includes the catholic church, whose history is the longest lived monstrosity in the western world. Their 600 years of terror during the crusades – a holocaust of the arabs – set that society up to be accepting of what gave us 9/11. Their hatred of Jews for centuries gave hitler the hate lever he needed to consolidate power in the 11930s, and launch wwII. And now it is the gays who are their whipping boy. I left them long ago, and have been trying on and off to be excommunicated so I can proudly dislay the letter of freedom from tyranny. You all should do the same.
Crist is pathetic, but the RCC is even more so. I’ve had just about enough of every so called neo-con Christian, Muslim, Buddist, Jew and assorted televangelist faith healer raising money, ILLEGALLY, to force their personal religious beliefs upon our society as a whole. If they don’t want to marry us, fine; but leave us the hell alone, and our civil right to marry whom we please in California. Archbishops Hugh and Mahoney, this is for your edification: go back to God’s work and give him what is his and leave ‘Ceasar’ and the public sectar alone. And, yes, you should lose your tax exempt status.
Well this is no different than his planned and covert attempt to pretend he was appointing a committee to review the gay adoption laws in Florida by putting a homophobic, bible toting Rhonda Storms over the committee. Can’t wait to leave the Bible belt.
All churches who participate in political activities should loose their non tax status. And I’m a faithful Luthern Evangelist who happens to be gay!
Typical Republican – willing to sell his soul to get elected. What a classless, useless man Ms. Crist is. And I hope his fiancee is ready to be the next Mrs. MacGreevy….
GOOD GOD! ANOTHER closeted gay man coming out as anti-gay??? How many of em are there???? I used to read about him saying he was gay… and he cetainly reminds me of all the other anti-gay gay repubs out there……. I just dont get it…..

Well said Steve!
I don’t care who is running against Crist next time, he gets a big campaign contribution. Crist claims to be moderate, but he actually works for right-wing hate campaigns on a predictable schedule. Closeted gay politicians seem to be compelled to demonstrate their non-gay status by sponsoring and campaigning for right-wing hate. I don’t understand it. It must be self-hate. The man needs to be in therapy, not in office.
what is it about all the republican closet pervs, lately? and, i’m renouncing the catholic church, officially!
He’s gay.
Charlie has sold his soul to the GOP. Typical FLA politician; he just needs to stay out of the men’s room to make it stick.
“After speculation began over his possible naming as McCain’s running mate, Crist announced his engagement to Carole Rome….
How many ways can you spell BEARD?
Well, his toe-tapping partner Larry Craig is sure going to miss him!
Of course the Catholic Church handing out Voting Pamphlet guides to their followers is completly illegal. Time to take away their tax-exempt status. Let’s see how they do when they have to start paying taxes on their collection plate extortion money.
Drop the bible and step away from the religion.
Who else is tired of being cast as the enemy of a war WE did not start?
