Neil Giuliano: Expanding common ground

As the president of GLAAD, I understand the influence and power of the media.

So I believe that a White House Press Secretary who is openly LGBT could play a very visible and influential role in helping people expand their understanding of the common ground we share, and how the critical issues of our day – from the economy to education to international affairs to immigration,
healthcare, national security and more – impact the lives of LGBT Americans.

From an international perspective and influence, an openly gay person serving as US Ambassador to the United Nations would send a daily reminder to leaders of other nations that human rights violations and discrimination against LGBT people are unacceptable and clearly contrary to the core values and beliefs of the people and government of the United States of America.

Neil Giuliano is the president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and former mayor of Tempe, AZ
