I don't know why this situation happened, though I would ask GE / NBC to go out of their way to report great successes by gay people.

Gays are the new religious / social victims of America, despised for who they are, in a variant of religious hatred that must make Jesus weep for what is done by some in His Name. It reminds me of the status of Jews for so many years in the first half of the 1900s.

One of the most important ways to break this tragedy and hypocrisy is for all the people to understand that gay people are ordinary, and sometimes extrodinary people, worth of our love and respect, and entitled to equal justice under the law.

And by doing this, we will see more and more of the younger generation calling the right wing religious bigots, for whom power at any one elses cost is their goal, what they are - a disgrace to this nation.

Although GE is not a 100 on the HRC Corporate Index they are a very progressive inclusive employer. I doubt that during the coverage that GE's Flagship Station NBC Universal was thinking about someones sexual orientation. I could only imagine that for them to point it out would make it appear as odd and down play the hard work that brought him the metal. NBCU has the largest GLBTA Employee Resource group in all of GE's Global Oragnization. The second largest GLBTA ERC group is based in the midwest at GE Money in Kansas City. GE provides all employess openess and acceptance and encourages diversity amoung its staff.

What about Todd Rogers? He's from the Central Coast of California. I happened to be searching for articles about the University of California, Santa Barbara, when his name popped up as a gold medalist and UCSB alum on a local NBC affiliate's website (KSBY). Lo and behold, the article mentions his partner.

What NBC did was bigoted.

I will always remember Matt winning gold. His accomplishment will not be brushed aside.

"David Ta Said: I would argue that there is a certain level of internalized homophobia going on when someone doesn’t see the problem with an out athlete being closeted."

If that was directed at my comment, there's not the slightest bit of internalized homphobia in what I said or in me. I don't expect everyone to see the world the way I do and I don't expect every Gay story to be front page news.

This young man and his family, his partner, should be proud of what he accomplished but not because he's Gay. They should be proud because he had the discpline and drive to do it.

I'm more surprised and horrified that Lawrence King isn't front page news in our country. I'm more surprised and horrified that recent AIDS statistics aren't front page news in our country. I'm more surprised and horrified that the Jena 6 trail isn't front page news. I could go on. Let's forget two wars, an economy in the toilet. You get the point

There are more important issues to scream about than NBCs coverage of the olympics.

That's not to say keep your mouth shut about the small stuff. Just put it into perspective.

Plus they don't even have to make a big deal out of this. They could have just said his mom and his partner are celebrating with him and blah blah blah and I'm sure people would have figured it out.

Because NBC is a large network and doing a story here would only reach...us. Plus if you've already read the story above, you've already known that he's accomplished a lot. Because sports are mainly closeted and those running the sports division of NBC are probably those who subscribe to a sportcentric, heterocentric attitude, that by intention or unintention, his story didn't get aired like everyone else.

I would argue that there is a certain level of internalized homophobia going on when someone doesn't see the problem with an out athlete being closeted. You're making the assumption that the majority of the viewers are straight. Ok, I'll give you that assumption, but there is also a good chunk that are LBGTQ from all around the world. How about letting them know that one of their own has won? Not everyone is privileged enough to get the Internet, and I bet you a lot of people don't know that he's out. Give those closeted people someone to look up to.

I guess I'm a bad Gay :(

I don't see the big deal. As someone pointed out, he's not American so he's not going to get the same press Americans do.

Instead of complaining about what NBC didn't do, why not do a story praising his accomplishments here?
