Sean Penn and “Milk,” Gus Van Sant’s biopic about gay rights leader Harvey Milk, continued to gain awards momentum Wednesday, winning best film from the New York Film Critics Circle.
Penn was chosen as best actor for his performance in the lauded film about Milk, the openly gay San Francisco politician who was assassinated in 1978. Josh Brolin won best supporting actor for his performance in the film.On Tuesday, Penn was chosen as best actor by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. “Milk” also leads the Broadcast Film Critics Association with eight nominations, tied for the most with “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”
Like their West Coast brethren, the New York critics picked Sally Hawkins for best actress for her performance in Mike Leigh’s “Happy-Go-Lucky.” Best director went to Leigh.
The New York circle, which last year chose “No Country for Old Men” as best film, is a group of 33 New York-based critics. Their picks are one of the early film honors in Hollywood’s long awards season, which continues Thursday with nominations for the Golden Globes.
Best supporting actress went to Penelope Cruz for her role in Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” Jenny Lumet, daughter of Sidney Lumet, won for her screenplay of “Rachel Getting Married.”
“Man on Wire” won best documentary, “WALL-E” won best animated film and “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” won best foreign film. Anthony Dod Mantle won for his cinematography in “Slumdog Millionaire.” Courtney Hunt (”Frozen River”) won for best first film.
The awards ceremony will be held Jan. 5 in New York.

After seeing this movie last night I have to say this is one of the most important films I have ever seen. I had tears in my eyes during several parts, and though I knew some of what Harvey Milk stood and fought for, I learned a lot more. The battle for equal rights he organized and fought for are on-going even today. It is so important that all generations of the GLBT community learn that even the few rights they enjoy today were sometimes earned with the blood of those who lived before us. They also need to realize that the proposition numbers may change, but the hate still exists and there are still Anita Bryants in this world who would continue to deny us basic human rights.
Amazing amazing film!!
Even though I’m straight. I wanted to say that Milk is an incredible Film. I grew up in the S.F. Bay Area. Milk really communicates Harvey’s love and caring for people and his personal commitment to make things better for everyone. Sean Penn has given a stunning performance that really embodies the spirit of Harvey Milk.
I did notice on the Top 10 Box Office stats on the IMDb that Milk is playing at only 328 Screens nationwide, while other Movies on the Box Office Top 10 are playing at 2K+ to 3K+ Screens nationwide. Hmmmm… But, the Weekend Screen $Average is way higher than 8 of
this week’s Box Office Top Ten. YAY TEAM!!! Milk should be in MORE Theaters nationwide. Don’t you think so too?
I’m really excited to see this movie, but unfortunately where I live the only theaters are Century Theater. Due to the CEO of Century Theater’s decision to donate nearly $10,000 to Yes on 8, I refuse to go to a Century Theater.
Be sure to see this film, also be sure not to give money to the same group of people that are helping strip LGBTQ individuals from equal civil liberties.
Excellent movie!! Sean Penn & James Franco gave an awesome performance. I give it 2 thumbs up…way up!

I have been telling everyone both gay and str8 that they MUST see this movie. This movie is not optional viewing. It’s simply one of the most incredible movies to make it to the screen. (And I see A Lot of movies!)
Sean Penn (although playing gay for pay) was solid in the role. I really hope he wins the Academy Award as best actor.
