Extraordinarily well put Corvino! I especially love the idea of Ralph Lauren sweater sets – it’s a policy I can live with! But all humor aside, my partner and I are the very proud parents of an amazing daughter, now 21, who is well adjusted, completing her schooling, working, politically active, generous to a fault and most of all loving towards not only her biological Dad, my partner, Mark, but to me, her ‘second Dad’. She is truly the great Joy of my life, and though I certainly made my share of mistakes as a parent, she knows I love her – and it is that love, knowing it exists, and understanding its meaning – that I’m here for her no matter what – that clearly has made all the unique challenges she has faced as a part of a nontraditional family no worse than the challenges all children face growing up. There are so many gay and lesbian couples whom, as you point out, truly want children and choose to have them for no reason other than love; for to share with a small child your experiences, your beliefs, your great joys as well as how you dealt with pain and sorrow, to listen to their hopes, needs and desires and to help them attain them, is the greatest privilege and responsibility I ever have undertaken. I can honestly say that for our government to undertake to deny any loving and capable person this most fundamental of relationships is an outrage. This relationship changes the heart for the better of both the parent and the child and must not be denied.
