Thank You Sean Penn for your bravery in playing the role of another brave man that would not be silenced and his memory lives on 30 years later. WE SHALL OVERCOME.

Harvey would have been very proud. I still find that the documentary produced in 1984 "The Life And Times Of Harvey Milk" is the best in accurately telling of his life.

The first time I arrived to San Francisco you would think that the city that this man fought so hard to have our voices heard and as the staging ground and a face for our civil rights would have dedicated more towards him and his memory right?
I was disappointed when my friend Dom took me to the Castro to where there was only a plaque at the entrance/exit of the Muni subway under the city.

Harvey deserved so much more than that. Hopefully this film will remind this selfish, self-serving, cowardly generation of why we must continue to fight on.

It's not about "ME ME ME" or "getting what I need".

It's about all of us.

Antonio: Many times in the past people have voted in unfair laws. A good example are housing laws that restricted by race in the 1960s. Laws like this have been overturned by the courts. Hopefully they will overturn Prop H8. 18,000 people are a lot to deny rights to. And there are many more. It is possible for the majority to not see the needs of any minority. Separtate but equal is not fair.

Well as a republican, If prop is reversed then I demand that President Obama's election be also reversed, because it means that the people's votes don't count. And I guess polygamists and people wanting to marry their cousins should also be treated equally in marriage. Sean Penn said it so beautifully, equality for ALL!

naacp expresses support for california legislature's challenge to prop. 8, calls for its overturn

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People today announced support of measures before the California legislature challenging Proposition 8, which altered the California Constitution to deny same-sex couples the freedom to marry and equal protection under the law.

In a letter to legislative leaders, NAACP national board chair Julian Bond and President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous urged passage of House Resolution 5 and Senate Resolution 7 to put the legislature on record calling for invalidation of Prop. 8 as an improper and dangerous alteration of the California Constitution.

"The NAACP's mission is to help create a society where all Americans have equal protection and opportunity under the law," said President Jealous. "Our Mission Statement calls for the 'equality of rights of all persons.' Prop. 8 strips same-sex couples of a fundamental freedom, as defined by the California State Supreme Court. In so doing, it poses a serious threat to all Americans. Prop. 8 is a discriminatory, unprecedented change to the California Constitution that, if allowed to stand, would undermine the very purpose of a constitution and courts - assuring equal protection and opportunity for all and safeguarding minorities from the tyranny of the majority."

I guess polygamists have a shot at gaining marriage equality too. They are pressing the courts in Canada for their rights and they are using gay marriage as their prop. I guess being gay I really have no right to put down a polygamist. Its a union btwn concenting adults too and marriage can be redifined.

angelo22 asks:"What’s wrong with civil unions with full rights? Why are we caught up in the name marriage that is defined in the dictionary as a union btwn man/woman?"

This was tried in NJ and they found that many business and organizations continue to discriminate against couples by not giving the same benefits to civil unions as they do to marriages. NJ is now likely going to change to marriage rather than civil unions.

RE: Dictionary definition; Definitions change as new occasions teach new meanings. The language is not static; any language which does not change is 'dead.' Don't be limited by archaic definitions as their accuracy is easily eroded by time and usage. The definition of marriage will soon change too as it has over the centuries. It once meant a social and economic contract to exchange chattel. The current definition is only a couple of centuries old and will gradually pass away too.

Do not be fooled by the so-called-christian's claims that marriage as we now know it was instituted in holy scripture -- it's simply not true. Do the research. It's a convenient lie.

Brent. Pretty good commentary. You hit most of the good highlights of the show. I might have some slight disagreements about a couple of your picks and pans choices. For example, I thought that the first musical number was much superior to the 2nd, which I found stupid and insipid. Also, one of the major reasons I tune into the Oscars is to hear the actual songs and scores being performed, not some stupid mashed up melody. That part was awful!
