Danny Roberts: Young gays need an openly-serving military offical to look up to

I would love to see a top ranking military official, especially from the Marines or Army to be openly serving.

"Gays are just as fit for important leadership roles as anyone else."
We live in such a military-loving, macho culture that reveres those who serve our country.  This person would bring a great deal of respect for the gay community as he/she would be a catalyst for the public to continue its reassessment of the way it views gays in our modern times.

Currently, gays tend to be viewed as weak, passive and unfit for leadership roles by the majority.  Someone serving in the position as say, a general, would turn these misconceptions on their head and help the public to understand the fact that gays are just as fit for important leadership roles as anyone else.

In addition to propelling change in the public’s opinion, this person would more importantly stand as a beacon of inspiration to young gays who desperately need strong, morally grounded role-models outside of the entertainment arena to look up to with respect. This of course can only occur if the current policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is erased.
