Withers: McCain returns Manhunt founder’s donation

Oh, the Manhunt saga is so juicy. Sex, politics, and money. What’s not to love? Unless you get your news fromĀ  CBN, the Manhunt tale has been tearing it up on the gay political sites. Here is the Cliff Notes version: co-founder Jonathan Crutchley gives maximum donation to John McCain’s campaign. People lose their minds. Crutchley is asked to resign from the Manhunt board and co-founder Larry Basile issues a statement apologizing for the whole mess.

Over the week-end, team McCain decided it was time to return Crutchley’s cash (we all saw that coming). Now according to Basile, Crutchley loves him some Obama and plans on giving the Democratic nominee a donation (hey Crutchley: when team Obama sends your check back, give it to me; I’ll proudly cash it).

Okay but here is the problem. Basile is doing all of the talking. Not a word from Crutchley. It is strange for a Republican, as Crutchley proudly described himself, to have a week-end conversion and now be all about the Democrats.

So Mr. Crutchley if you are out there (and we know you are), give us a call here at 365. Let’s sit down for an interview.

    • As distasteful and kapo-ish as a donation to McCain is – did I actually read what I read? Someone got fired for a political donation?

The laws are such that someone CAN be fired for sexual orientation – let’s change those – but I think it’s pretty clearly established that you CAN’T fire someone for his politics.

    • Rather than void the check Crutchley should forward it to the California campaign to defeat proposition 8.

    • I would hardly call Manhunt a “dating site.” In fact, it’s something that our community should be embarrassed to be connected with. It (apparently) encourages meaningless hookups and reckless activities.

A politician accepting money from such a site is tantamount to political suicide. How long ya’ll think your golden boy would keep a donation from a sex site?

    • what candidate in their right or left minds wants money from a dating site, that is SO TACKY!!

    • Pete: and that is how I could hold some respect for Log Cabiners and other gays who support the GOP. Otherwise in my book, they’re just Jews for Hitler. Cause let’s not kid ourselves, if the extremist in control of the GOP got their way, that’s what would happen to us.

    • This is hysterical! The right wingers do not want you Mr Crutchley, will you ever understand this? They hate us all!

    • Typical; gay Quisling gives to Right Wing candidate; donation becomes public; Quisling is abandoned by his friends and then dissed by the RWer he donated to. When will these people ever learn?

    • With all due consideration, respect is earned – not automatically given. I do not have respect for any GLBT person who, knowingly, lets their money be used to, undermine GLBT rites (directly or indirectly). I also don’t know that these kinds of sites are “nothing but trouble” – as with so many things in the modern computer era, it can be either a good or bad experience depending on what you put into it and take out of it. As someone once said, “gays that support the Republican Party are like chickens that support Frank Perdue”.

  • Paul Said: August 19th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
    • We all have to be respectful of our gay brothers and sisters who choose to be Republican, but when you make a donation like that so public, you know you are going to get yourself into trouble. Regardless of the origins of the ‘Scamhunt’ stories from Out Magazine. That site is nothing but trouble for the gay community. What efforts are they making to educate the community at all with their site?

    • Its not so hard to understand people like Crutchley and Log Cabin republicans. The French had the same issue with the Vichy government in WW2. They are called collaborators.

    • I guess there are some who wold find an interview with Crutchley interesting. I wouldn’t be one of them. Like most hypocrites, he’ll only be defending his rationalizations for doing what he would still do today in the situation were the same. Any apologetics would be because he got caught, not because he now cares. Still, I’m sure there are some LogCabiner types who would find it interesting. IMHO, as long as he is making a cent from the site, I won’t be on it and will continue to actively inform friends about the situation. He has a rite to use his time/money as he sees fit and so do we.

    • No invite to White House galas with the other big donors. What a shame. You know the Bush White House probably had a special entrance just for donors like Mr. Crutchley with Jeff Gannon waving them in. With money like his, you’d think Mr. Crutchley would be doing something constructive like sponsoring Republican policy sessions at some think tank to ween his party off its religious addictions. Or better yet, why not found a lgbt think tank to construct conservative policy.
