At least when the Supreme Court upholds Prop 8 we'll have grounds to get political asylum to leave the U.S.

@Aiden--I'd love it if Obama would show some support for gay equality issues. I'd love out equality to come in part from our President's support. I'd love to see him follow through on his pretty words. I'm angry at his inaction precisely because he can act on so many other things. Seriously--you think it takes months to issue a simple written statement supporting repeal of DADT or DOMA? He wouldn't even have to write it (that's what his staff are for). Does anybody think the President himself really has to engage in endless politicking on something like DADT, which can easily be repealed two years after the bill is passed? Again, that's what staffers are for. No, I think I can speak for a few people here in saying that I/we hold Obama to a higher standard than someone like Bush because Obama was the one who presented himself as the morally and ethically clean candidate. Had he not made gay-supportive comments in the past, had he not played "If-I-were-President" and then clearly hinted about removing legislative discrimination against gays, then he wouldn't face so much criticism today. I want him to do the right thing because that's still who I see him to be. Or at least who I want him to be.

What happens if Obama does make some GLBT progress over the next year. All the Obama haters are going to have to start eating their hat. Lets not forget that Obama is not a gay activist, he's the president and has to first and foremost make financial decisions. He doesn't MAKE the law, he enforces the law. He can only tell Congress the type of legislation they should focus on because he'll pass it. Why should they focus on legislation he won't pass when we are in a financial crisis. These are comments I'd expect to hear after a couple years, not a few months.

LOL, I delivered the free version of the Pantagraph on Tuesdays when I lived in Clinton, IL as a kid. One day I had some guy throw it back at me so from then on, I just got my bundle and tossed it in the dumpster and collected a check. Nobody knew for about 6 months and then one day, my papers just stopped showing up.

@Michael
Oh, please, give up the Hillary '08 corpse already! We know exactly what a Clinton Administration looks like: signing the Defense of Marriage Act and then advertising support for it on Christian radio, signing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" into law and calling it gay liberation, sabotaging Senate passage of ENDA in 1996. The only dumbasses are the people who thought the Clintons' third term would somehow be a complete opposite from their first two backstabbing terms. The biggest problem with the Obama Administration is that its been overrun by ex-Clinton triangulators, starting with Rahm Emmanuel.

@equalnotspecial
From your description of your own activities, let me assure you that I do more than you, including contacting local, state, and federal reps routinely and fundraising. So you can spare me your sanctimonious condescension. What I don't do is spend my time politely begging for crumbs. If you want to spend your time doing that and just get dismissed and postponed, that's your prerogative. But stay out of the way of people who think a more assertive approach toward Obama is warranted because some of us can already very clearly see the hints of Clintonian triangulation all over the Obama administration's approach to LGBT issues. We've been there, done that with Bill Clinton, and won't sit by and be treated like fools again. So go Praise Him and beg for crumbs. Crumbs are all you'll get with that approach.

Yes it's disappointing but let's keep moving forward. I was shocked to learn awhile back that Obama favoured "separate but equal" regarding same-sex marriage. As an African-American he ought to know better; the experience of his people belies that oxymoron.

I've been reading about President Lincoln and for the masses of people, he was no advocate, and only freed the slaves because political expediency required it. This is Obama's role model & it explains much about him.

Obama's a lame empty suit. Isn't it ironic that at the same time he's ignoring us about prop 8 (only mention of gays and lesbians during his recent trip to LA was t complain about protesters making him late?!) and not campaigning for civil unions in Illinois Hillary (our other choice) is taking on homophobia in the state department and fighting for equal benefits for partners of consular staff and diplomats. It makes you wonder what might have been if all of you dumbasses who voted for him in the primaries would have woken the fuck up and realized he was never going to be a supporter of our needs or interests.

Hate to sa it but I told ya so...

I am convinced that Obama has no plans to do anything for us until his second term due to fear of being voted out after his first term.
