News & Politics

Several Vermont senators spoke eloquently about why it is important that their gay and lesbian neighbors share the rights of straight people.

And the Senate voted for gay marriage, 26-4.

Next, it goes to a House committee, and then the full House, which also has a Democratic majority and is likely to pass the bill. The governor, Republican Jim Douglas, has said he’s against gay marriage – but hasn’t signaled whether he’d sign or veto the bill.

Here’s video of the Senate speeches on gay marriage.

Part one (the gay marriage part starts at the very end, 56 minutes out of 57 minutes in):
Part two (all gay):

We’ll have a full story later, and I’m looking now to find some quotes.

    • Every once in a while, things happen that restore my faith in this country. Kudos to VT Senators for taking this courageous step forward.

    • Meanwhile in California, the supreme court just passed a new law, basic rights by piñata contest. A list of basic rights will be inserted in a piñata, if you are able to grab all the rights when the piñata is smashed you will be able to enjoy most of basic rights like everyone else. This doesn’t mean you have all the rights yet. The supreme court will have to ask authorization to the elders of the mormon church in Utah, if they are ok, then you are too. :-)

We’ll be taking care of them soon like the former slave states were dealt with! let this be a warning to ALL enemies of our civil rights! Religious bigotry is GOING to fall by the wayside folks and OUR day IS coming “Whether you like it or NOT!!!”. Peace out.

    • Just watched the entire debate. Glad to see that only 4 state senators had cranio-anal infarction.

      Thanks boys and girls.

    • Don’t count your chickens yet. The governor is probably going to veto it. Then we have to hope the legislature and senate can override it.

    • Lets hope NH follows in the footsteps of its neighbors. Might be difficult since the gay marriage bill is going to the senate without a committee recommendation but hopefully they’ll do what is right… like Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Looks like New England is becoming the new Gay Mecca.

    • This vote is a victory. Marriage passing the Vermont legislature on this try is almost not as important as the fact that the full Senate voted yes by an almost 7 to 1 margin. Look at these legislators. Can you tell just by looking that most wil vote yes? Probably not, and as it should be. It’s a beautiful moment. Twenty-six who had sufficiently little negative reaction from constituents that they seem to see no risk come the next election. Or maybe some of those 26 have gotten that negative feedback, and they’re displaying their stubborn refusal to let the state interfere in the lives of the people. Whatever the case, it’s a helluva fine thing. I hope the House follows suit.

    • What’s the betting the rethuglican governor vetoes it just as girly man did first time around in California. I hope he signs it but my gut feeling tells me otherwise. His job is more important than our rights.
