Vanasco: Tammy Baldwin named honorary inaugural co-chair

News & Politics

President-Obama is nothing if not politically savvy.

Perhaps as a bone to gays upset over Rick Warren’s invitation to give the opening prayer during the inaugural ceremony, the openly lesbian Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) has been named one of 15 honorary co-chairs of the inaugural committee.

Of course, honorary co-chairs are just that – honorary. They don’t do anything. Their names are just on the stationary.

In other Warren news, Katha Pollitt points out that Warren has also disrespected Jewish people -they will burn in hell, he has said – and that Muslim leaders should basically be killed for being “evil.”

Do you think that once Warren’s anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim views become more widespread, Obama will stop defending him?

    • I never believed in a “gay mafia” until I read the hate-filled rantings of people on this website. Seriously, some of you seem beyond crazy and unable (or unwilling) to understand how politics works. Looking like a left-wing version of Fred Phelps (and I include all Kucinich supporters and disgruntled Hillary supporters who voted for McCain out of spite in this category) does NOT in any way advance our equality in society.

Social change occurs through patience, stamina, and building political alliances with others. Whether people choose to believe it or not, Obama is our ally and we need to give him a chance to prove it starting next month.

    • Warren is a spiritual terrorist and should be banned from the inauguration!

    • I am not sure I want to see this inauguration anymore. Rick Warren giving this invocation just makes a mockery of the hopes of many of us for something different.

Kucinich likely would not have had a homophobe giving speech at his inauguration, he like most of us, likely would have found this Warren fellow both highly inappropriate for this occasion and highly repulsive as well regardless.

So, Warren gets invited to the homes of gay folk for dinner? No way.

    • Oh My Gosh! An Honorary Co-Chair!

We Gays Have Made It Now!

Now Obama doesn’t have to appoint any gays to say…. an important position?

    • Tammy, don’t be used. Just say no.

    • Maybe we can stop the fire storm created by Mr. Obama’s having Mr. Warren give the invocation. We’ll declare Mr. Warren an honorary homosexual and then he can give the invocation satisfying all parties.

    • Hey – don’t get down on Barack – I’m sure there are going to be plenty of gay waiters at the party. Perhaps he’ll appoint a gay as the head of the sweep up team!

    • Thanks Ramsey – now maybe you can turn on the ovens!

    • Tammy sounds like a ‘tard for accepting this. Is she slow or soemthing? Maybe he was going for a two-fer: Gay and mentally challenged. Only way to exlpain why any gay or lesbian would be involved with that event. That or a glutton for abuse…

    • Sigh.

Okay, again. I’m no Rick Warren fan, at all! But let’s not become FOX News-like in our reports, okay? Let’s put these quotes into context:

“When it came time for questions, a woman stood up, proclaimed her Judaism, and asked Warren if she was going to burn in hell. He paused before responding–and then answered her question the only way it could be answered. Yes, he said to audible gasps. My reaction was that either you believe that Jesus is the savior or you do not, and I found myself impressed that Warren remained true to his convictions, knowing full well that the audience would not like what he said.”

Yes, it’s harsh. But he didn’t start the topic, someone else did and he answered honestly. According to his denomination, and many others, that’s what they believe. Ask the Pope the same question. Religions have never been the most politically correct organizations.

As for Muslim leaders being killed, from the same article you linked:

“On “Hannity & Colmes,” he agreed that the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, should be killed because “the Bible says God puts government on Earth to punish evildoers.”

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The same guy that gays everywhere absolutely despise for his and his country’s stance on gay rights. I’d wager some folks on this site wouldn’t mind if he suffered an “unfortunate accident.” Lumping him into “Muslim leader” is kind of disingenuous.

I’m not saying Warren is right. He’s saying what he believes, which is based on certain parts of his religion, and honestly, all religions have weird rules that piss off whole groups of people. I just implore the writers on this site to have a bit more objectivity.

I myself will celebrate the honor that Ms. Baldwin has received.

    • So much for “fierce.”

  • Chris Sullivan Said: December 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
    • Oh gee – wWOW – this just makes up for everything… (at least for those used to enjoying token crumbs!)

  • Eddie Said: December 22nd, 2008 at 5:26 pm
    • I’m sad Tammy is letting herself be used this way. Well, a fig leaf is better than no leaf I guess. I know, shut up and get in the back of the bus and quit being upity.

  • K Said: December 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm
    • I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this.
