After months of waiting, the California Supreme Court decision on Proposition 8 is in:

Prop 8 is upheld – there will be no new gay marriage in California. But the 18,000 couples in California who were married last summer will stay married.

More to come after we read the decision. Read the gay marriage decision for yourself.

In the meantime – want to protest? Check out DayofDecision.com to find an event tonight near you.

A great recap of how we came to this point is at the LA Times.

Prop 8 press conferences are live here until 2:30 EST.

    • No riots please. Use your anger to make positive change, not destruction. Remember, we have to convince more people to vote for us. Intimidation won’t work. We are a minority, and have to get more votes.
Sign petitions, support candidates who support us, pressure your representatives, write letters, protest, but be civil about it. Being destructive will be self destructive.
Get rid of DADT because it teaches discrimination and stigmatization. We’ll never get equal rights as long as the government teaches prejudice.

    • This is a sad day in American and California history because we have witnessed another example of tyranny by a majority taking away a fundamental right from an already oppressed minority. Absent any viable and realistic redress, the fomenting anger and frustration may plant the seeds for rebellion.

    • This is the hazard of relying on a judiciary-based strategy in a state with direct democracy of the sort that California has. There is not likely to be any way to overturn this in court, so folks might as well stop wasting the time and energy and instead redirect focus to a counter ballot initiative.

    • Now that minority rights are not protected, Bam – and his people – can be silenced. Let’s start with the Hispanic SCOTUS nominee?

    • It’s time to fight. This was a setback… but not the end. We can still fight for our rights to be treated like everyone else.

    • One judge voted against Prop 8 – I’d like to know who that judge was.

    • To be expected. How about we start pushing back and getting hundreds of thousands of signatures on a ballot initiative to put an end to tax-exempt status for all religious cults meddling in the political process for starters? Let them get a taste of what discrimination is all about for a change. Religion is at the core of this hate legislation make no mistake about it and since when did religion have the right to discriminate in a secular state and society?

    • Not surprising. We knew this back when the trial was going on, didn’t we?

    • “If you stick a knife nine inches into my back and pull it out three inches, that is not progress. Even if you pull it all the way out, that is not progress. Progress is healing the wound, and America hasn’t even begun to pull out the knife.” (Malcom X)

No sir- they just cut with different knives.

    • Today, embarassed to be a citizen of the United States. Perhaps no surprising for a country founded on the destruction of the American Indian civilzation that was here before us. A country that promoted slavery. A country that allows its heterosexual citizens to control the lives of its homosexual citizens. This embarassment will last only a day.

We’ve endured worse, we will prevail.

    • Seriously, I do not even live in the U.S.A but i feel the injustice that this ruling is making. You would think that in todays progressive society one would not be affected by others way of life. What has gay marriage got to do with ‘traditional marriage’? I live in a country where I can marry who I want when I want but I feel for all the people in America who have to go through this. This is plain wrong and I sincerely hope that people in power will look at this and realise that we do not need to go back in history and deny people rights that they deserve. Really? Really?
