Vanasco: Gay “conversion” scientists made it up

Surprise, surprise.

The New York Times’ John Tierney reports on his blog today that a new book questions whether Masters & Johnson faked the conversion of gays and lesbians into happy heterosexuals. Ex-gay groups, like Exodous International, often use the Masters & Johnson study to say that the ability to turn gays into ex-gays has a scientific basis. Fail!

Book author Thomas Maier reports his findings in Scientific American:

“When the clinic’s top associate, Robert Kolodny, asked to see the files and to hear the tape-recordings of these “storybook” cases, Masters refused to show them to him. Kolodny—who had never seen any conversion cases himself—began to suspect some, if not all, of the conversion cases were not entirely true. When he pressed Masters, it became ever clearer to him that these were at best composite case studies made into single ideal narratives, and at worst they were fabricated.”

Gee. The grandparents of ex-gay conversion therapy made it up? Who would have thought?

    • Divorce is sin,
      where are laws against that.
You can’t make a fish fly like a bird and you can’t make a bird swim like a fish.
If you are gay, that’s cool.
If you are not gay, that’s cool.
      What happened to equality?
Glad the thing was made up, if I read that right, I may not have. Oops.

    • So the obvious has finally been confirmed. Good.

Now’s the time that they should be forced to answer for all the blood on their hands as a result of these harmful lies. I would love to send them a picture of all the (known) graves of suicides that have resulted from their lies over the decades.

Putting people in a position to believe that they can change something as core as their sexuality – and then not being able to do it – would be a pretty big blow to anyone. The fact that they knew they couldn’t and that it leads to such emotional turmoil should be considered criminal. They saw this, and LET IT CONTINUE!!!! Its like a religiously sanctioned Dr. Kevorkian mixed with old testament ideology.
But hey, what does the religious community care? As far as they’re concerned, it drove a bunch of gays to suicide, and is OK according to their beliefs. This was just a way for them to kill without getting their hands dirty.

    • I am a Gay therapist and can tell you from all of my studies (in and out of school) on this subject that it is not really possible to “convert” any human emotion out of existence. You can deny feelings for the same sex but that only creates a pressure cooker of emotions that can blow up in your face or someone else’s. A person’s sexuality is written into their biology not the whim of personal choice. With this in mind, I like to quote Saint Thomas Aquinas: When you make a mistake about Creation you make a mistake about God. For any reputable therapist to say that they can convert anyone into being a heterosexual is getting it all wrong. So-called conversion therapy is denounced by every major counseling organization, as being potentially very harmful and ineffective.

    • Amazing how people are so focused on what people do sexually – who cares if someone wants cock over pussy/or vise vers? Religion is such BS,a form of “mind” control for the weak, who can’t think for themselves….Im fed up with it all….just be a decent human on the planet earth for pete’s sake..treat others as you yourself wish to be treated – how hard is that? (NO Buy-Bull needed)

    • When a scientist refuses to provide documentation of his/her work, that’s a pretty good indicator that it’s BS. What scientific journal is going to publish results of a study without documentation? It’s basic.
