Vanasco: Changes to 365gay

News & Politics

Hi 365gay community,

We’re now requiring that you register before you’re allowed to comment on the site. You can either give us your information directly – or you can click on Facebook connect, and register through your Facebook account (which means that Facebook will hold your info, not us, and it remains private). Facebook Connect will also give you the option of sharing with your friends your 365gay post.

You will only have to register once. (We have to do it to comment, too!)

Why are we doing this?

1. It will cut down on spam, and also, hopefully, on users who try to browbeat the community by posting the same opinion under many different usernames (sockpuppeting).

2. It is a neat addition for Facebook users.

3. It means that we will be able to bring back forums (not right away, but soon.)

We’re very, very excited about the forum possibility, which will bring more conversation into our very rich community.

Now, a question for you:

Pam’s House Blend and other sites require that people who register abide by community guidelines. Should we do something similar? What guidelines would you suggest?

    • Logging in is fine. Facebook even better….but you should provide a mechanism to have an alias on the posted message, rather than forcing Facebook users to have their full first/last names visible. I’m out, but not everyone is.

    • I think this is an excellent addition. I find that some of the comments on the site seem to have been added due to the writers’ ability to avoid disclosing their names. This will allow everyone to express themselves more appropriately.

    • Using the “Contact Us” page linked from the bottom of the site?

    • We should be allowed to criticize religious groups. They attack us without abandon. There are good christians out there but even they have mostly lost control of their own religions and/or afraid to stand up for the rights of all. Much of the problems that GLBT run into are generated by the religions. If they can dish it out we should be able to also.

Attacking a person (not a religion) should not be allowed.

365 or it’s affiliates should not email us anything at all and must not sell our email addresses. If they will then I will go elsewhere to get my news. I shouldn’t have to trade privacy for knowledge and empowerment.

    • Dermot,

I think that’s a good idea. People should email me with abuses – perhaps if someone gets 3-5 emails from users about being abusive, I’ll ban them (once we’ve established a TOS, so the rules are clear)

  • Dermot Said: July 22nd, 2009 at 3:34 pm
    • Is there a way to report abusive behavior by other commentators?

  • petenick Said: July 22nd, 2009 at 3:14 pm
    • This is a great idea. This will allow 365gay to be aware of the crazies from the right who occasionally visit this site.

    • In the spirit of David Moore, I also belong to another community – the snopes.com message boards. They also really like the stories I link on here over there. I would encourage similar rules that they have as well.

    • Hi guitarcub,

We won’t be selling addresses. If that’s not enough reassurance, absolutely use a Facebook account! Your privacy is then protected – in fact, it means we can only email you through Facebook.

    • I belong to Propeller.com, and link many of the stories from here on that site. I know many of my stories gather quite a few “props” there, and like their terms of service. Perhaps, the community here could adapt some of their Terms of Use? Just a thought.

    • I agree that there probably should be policies about hate of religious groups… I think transphobia is an issue that ought be addressed better too.

    • The FaceBook option is a good one. Thank you for making it available.

  • guitarcub Said: July 22nd, 2009 at 2:28 pm
    • Hey Jennifer, how about some assurances from this site that you won’t be selling out email addresses to vendors, even gay-friendly ones?

  • Tyone Haynes Said: July 22nd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
    • maybe cussing rules
      and like hate rules
cuz we scream how were hated but when we start
      calling religious groups
Taliban we are not helping the cause at all
