To me, the debate format didn't allow the kind of spontaneous interaction that can reveal the true character of a candidate. Also it didn't allow the moderator to ensure that the questions asked were actually answered. I had the luxury (or not) of watching the Canadian leaders debate held at the same time. The format there provided a better picture of those participants, due to a more flexible style that allowed interaction and immediate responses to attacks. Someone with Palin's level of preparation would not have lasted to the end of the debate, and would have been exposed as incompetent. While the US campaigns are very exhausting, I think the debates are far too easy.
