Vanasco: Advantage, America

This was a great debate. A great debate.

Both Biden and Palin were civil and passionate. My own bias says that Biden was stronger on the issues – and of course he was much stronger on gay relationships, saying that they should be protected by the Constitution.

For that alone, Biden is my guy.

But they were both collected. Palin didn’t have the deer-in-the-headlights look she did when she was interviewed by Katie Couric; Biden didn’t ramble on and on or make the verbal gaffes he is known for.

Both were disciplined attack artists, artfully disagreeing on how to fix the economy and how to end the war.

This is what America needs more of. Respectful, deep debate that gets to the heart of our philosophical distances while respecting that we all want what’s best for our families and the country.

    • To me, the debate format didn’t allow the kind of spontaneous interaction that can reveal the true character of a candidate. Also it didn’t allow the moderator to ensure that the questions asked were actually answered. I had the luxury (or not) of watching the Canadian leaders debate held at the same time. The format there provided a better picture of those participants, due to a more flexible style that allowed interaction and immediate responses to attacks. Someone with Palin’s level of preparation would not have lasted to the end of the debate, and would have been exposed as incompetent. While the US campaigns are very exhausting, I think the debates are far too easy.
