Though Kari will probably STILL stick her head into the clouds believing that her posts are ACTUALLY unbiased and that she is doing *trying to keep from laughing* something worthwhile, I would like to point out to her that Buddhism, whether in the East or West, has NEVER had a reputation for being homophobic.

I refer to Louis Crompton's HOMOSEXUALITY AND CIVILIZATION, Chapters 8 ("Imperial China") and 13 ("Pre-Meiji Japan"). In Chapter 8, he describes the ideal of bisexuality in Taoist influenced areas, and how it continued when Buddhism became the dominant religion. In chapter 13 he speaks of the ideal of pederasty that came from Buddhist monks that journeyed to Japan.

Kari this is but one example of specious argument I noticed on your part.

FROM Ynet News (Israel): 'Modesty patrol' suspected of spilling acid on teenage girl, by Neta Sela, 06/05/08

Religious tensions at boiling point in Beitar Illite as 14-year-old girl attacked by member of town's 'modesty guard'

(EXCERPT) A 14-year-old girl from Beitar Illite was taken to the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem after an unknown person spilled acid on her face, legs and stomach, causing light burn wounds.

The act has been attributed to a representative of the so-called 'modesty guard' in this town where religious and secular residents are increasingly at bitter odds....

...According to the paramedic the focus of the threats has largely been the victim's 18-year-old sister and some suspect the attacker mistook the younger girl's identity for that of her older sister's...

...An ultra-Orthodox teen from Beitar Illite who is in contact with the girl’s family spoke with her sister who described the incident.
Jennifer, I don't think religion hates you. There are misguided and spiteful people who may use religion to hate you, but religion itself isn't any more capable of hate than the color blue, or the number 5. I personally don't think it's about who is worse, or who hates who more. There is no question that countless terrible acts have been committed by people in the name of religion. However, countless acts of goodwill have been committed in the name of the same religions. It goes back to lumping everybody into the same category. Just because someone tarnishes a religion's image by using it as an excuse to commit a crime, that does not mean that everyone who is a follower of that faith is equally as evil.

Aside from all of that, I find little logic or promise of a better tomorrow by using the argument: we should stop hating each other, so you go first. Who am I to expect someone to understand me, if I don't try to understand them? Rights don't fall out of the sky, and people don't drop their bigotry on a whim. Like it or not, we all have to live with each other, and we need people from all walks of life to better understand us before we can expect the masses to get outraged at this sort of violence. Maybe religion isn't for you. It isn't for me either. But that doesn't mean that it's not for everybody. If we continue to denounce religion in general, or worse, blame an entire race for losing our chance at rights, we become no better than the people we think we're fighting.

While some people think that returning hate for hate is acceptable, it remains completely counterproductive. Of course, I'm outraged, but we have to get beyond that and figure out how we are going to change minds. Unless you plan on shooting back, I don't know of any other way.

If you want to truly put homophobia and hatred toward religions on the same plateau then please show me an example of a gay person killing a religious person simply because they were religious. If I should love and tolerate religion then religion should do the same for me! As long as religion hates me then I shall hold no love in my heart for religion.

Roger: You are a troll. Your posting confirms this beyond a shadow of a doubt. There is nothing more to discuss here since you refuse to actually read the posts you are responding to.

Since I do not feed trolls, I will say: Have a nice day.

Everyone is on our own journey in live be it faith or atheism. Meanwhile we should put aside our differences and unite in mourning these three young lives.
Arik is right, we are busy arguing and not stopping to pay respect to these young people and their families in Tel Aviv.

Arik, my heart goes out to those kids in Tel Aviv. They didn't ask to be killed. We all here join you in mourning the lost of these innocent young lives just trying to live their own lives.
