Tim Hortons Drops NOM Event

After an angry public reaction, the coffee and bakery chain Tim Hortons has pulled out of a National Organization for Marriage event scheduled for Sunday, August 16th in Rhode Island.

NOM is a group dedicated to “protecting” straight marriage from the threat of same-sex marriage. The organization is perhaps best known for the much-lampooned “Gathering Storm” commercial, which is mysteriously no longer available on their website.

A spokesperson for Hortons indicated that a regional branch had at first agreed to provide coffee for the “marriage protection” rally, and the decision to participate had not been made by the corporate headquarters.

A flurry of protests from LGBT bloggers helped make Hortons customers aware of the nature of the event and drove a campaign to contact the company’s headquarters in both the U.S. and Canada. Hortons, citing a company policy against sponsoring political or religious groups, backed out of participating.

The NOM event is called “Rhode Island’s First Annual FREE Celebrate Marriage & Family Day,” and is scheduled to include a ceremony for married couples to renew their vows, “live worship music, guest speakers, plenty of food, and activities for children.”

But no coffee.

    • A pleasant result from a company started in Canada. A company that has a reasonable policy to stay out of this sort of event.

However, the company is referred to as Tim Hortons, Timmy Ho’s, Tim’s, or Timmies…but never simply “Hortons”.

      Cheers.

    • Will they be awake enough to spout hate of same-sex couples without their coffee?

    • I’m sure Tim Horton (The hockey player, anyone?) is rolling his eyes at this one

    • Apparently Blount Fine Foods (who supply seafood products that are sold at Panera Bread and Legal Seafood) have also pulled out. NOM just can’t catch a break, can they? Based on the menu printed in their event brochure I think they’re down to just potato chips now.

    • This is amazing! This is exactly what we should be doing! Make our voices heard and our lives respected! I applaud everyone who had something to do with this awareness campaign.

      Keep up the good fight.

    • Hundreds of str8 kids at our college have joined the 100,000 strong group which has pledged to never get married until gay people can get married.

It is certainly fair that for those who want to stop / destroy gay marriage, they should be in effect held accountable for their actions, by destroying the institution that in most states is little different then the segregated south of the past. To hell with those fuckers. May the God Vesuvius the second rise up in a slightly different place, and destroy the home base of religious fascism.

    • I notice that there is a renewal of wedding vows at the NOM event. A bunch of gay families should attend and renew their wedding vows there.

    • That’s a crazy long name for an event! I love how on the surface it’s marketed as a generic “marriage and family” celebration day.

When you read a little further, you see that the musical entertainment will be “worship” music. ONLY Fundies listen to that stuff, i.e., this is just another fundy pep rally.

I suppose there’s no non-fundies or even GAYS themselves who’d like to “celebrate marriage and family” in R.I.

Could we PLEASE organize a mass showing of GAY FAMILIES WITH KIDS to overtly and loudly join the festivites? I’d LOVE to see what the NOM organizers reaction would be. The same way we started crashing the White House Easter Egg Hunt! All of our folks could where obnoxious t-shirts with slogans like “Denial Of Marriage Hurts My Kids” and their kids could where matching shirts with a slogan something like “Let My Parents Marry”!…

I wonder if they’d risk the bad PR of harrassing gay families!

Quick, someone needs to organize this. I would assume there’s more gays in R.I. than fundies, huh?

    • {“protecting” straight marriage} Please, NOM, tell me exactly how this threat will transpire?

Aww, you can’t? Too bad, none of you can. Got’cha!
