The rumor: McCain’s Chief of Staff is gay

News & Politics

Since last night, we here at 365gay have been following the spiraling story of Mark Buse, John McCain’s chief of staff.

Mike Rogers at BlogActive and Michelangelo Signorile released evidence of Buse’s gayness last night, citing “unnamed sources” plus a man who claims to be Buse’s ex-boyfriend, Brian Davis.

Today, the blogopshere has been on fire.

We try not to out people here, which is why we didn’t report on it earlier. But once the Miami Herald’s Steve Rothaus posted about it, we felt that we should at least alert readers.

Why is this important? Because Mark Buse is not a celebrity. He is a political figure who is one of the most important advisors to a man running for President – a man who does not support ENDA, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act, gay marriage or civil unions, gay and lesbian adoption, or the ending of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

    • If he is the same guy I talked to at work fixing a cell phone…then oh yeah, he is gay. It is funny that on top of all that, someone as anti-Union as McCain would use the only unionized wireless carrier in the States for his campaign…

    • McCain does not hate gays. He’s simply doing anything he can to get the presidency. That’s worse in my book.

    • “We try not to out people here” — unless someone else does the rumormongering first?

    • That’s bull Michael. Become informed. Listen to his acceptance speech (I was there). Look at the large number of LGBT folks at the Democratic Convention. It exceeded the diversity goal set.

No candidate can speak about our issues 24/7. Grow up. There are many, many issues a president has to deal with and Obama has been incredible speaking on ours.

    • Calling Baracka Obama a ‘gay advocate’ is like calling the Tooth Fairy a spokesperson for dental health. His interaction with gays and lesbians is ancillary to his politics and nothing more than a by-product of his status as the democratic nominee. Face it. To him we’re an afterthought…

Gay and lesbian issues are so peripheral to his campaign and message. When he’s not actively dismissing us altogether. See the values and families tour for proof of that…

So what if McCain’s chief of staff is gay. There’s a spectrum here. I find it frightful that there are people who attend straight weddings and don’t dance with their spouses for fear of upsetting friends and family. To me that’s just as inconsistent and dishonest as someone working for a republican presidential nominee as a chief of staff. It’s all degrees people. You may be busy judging someone else but keep in mind there’s someone judging you as well. And chances are under their standards your just as lacking as the person you’re judging is under yours..

    • A male homosexual who works for Senator Bastard can hardly be considered “gay.” “Cocksucker” might be appropriate. Barney Frank is gay; McCain’s chief of staff is a cocksucker.

    • What’s with all these nefarious gays doing the devil’s work? Can’t they make a living doing the right thing? I think it must be some kind of sexual satisfaction they get being masochists!

  • Roger RamJet Said: September 23rd, 2008 at 6:47 pm
    • Once Bush is gone, so is Jeff Gannon. No Republican Cock-Suckers Left Behind. So McCain is bringing in his very own Cock-Sucker. This is good, because when Sen. Larry Craig readmitts his Federal Constitutional Ban on gay marriage for passage, Mark Buse can suck his scaly old limp noodle too!

Oh, and the country is financially melting down right now as we speak and they throw this crap to distract us all?????

Oh, hey – look, something shiny over there…

    • I viewed McCain as the least repugnant of all the Republicans in the 2000 election and I still believe it. That he hires gay staff doesn’t surprise me. But I’ll still be voting for Obama.

    • Does no one remember that Senator Rick Santorum’s (R-PA) chief of staff got Outed in 2006? You know, the senator that said gay sex was the same as ‘man on dog’? The concept isn’t new, even if the individual situation is.

Here’s hoping the hypocrisy becomes the talking point, like it did in Santorum’s reelection bid.

Too bad in Santorum’s case, an anti-gay anti-abortion Republican got replaced by an anti-gay anti-abortion Democrat.

    • I cant believe that one of our own are in there. I could not put my self even next to McCain. to each there own

    • stan, I feel the opposite. This reflects very badly on McCain as a hypocrite. It sounds like he exploited the talent and power-hungriness of a person whose kind he publicly denigrates. Whether he is homophobic in his heart, or for political reasons, or both, it’s sickening.

  • rj Said: September 23rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
    • who cares. we have a current vp whose daughter is gay and look at all the good that did us. if a father doesn’t care about his own flesh and blood enough to support legislation important to her life, then McLame certainly would care less about his chief of staff. the guy will probably be replaced if this story hits mainstream so they can protect their base support.

  • stan Said: September 23rd, 2008 at 3:00 pm
    • This seems like an attempt to tell voters, “it’s ok to vote for McCain – see” – This will not make McCain even close to the gay advocate Obama is. SO don’t let it cloud your judgement people.
