Ruby-Sachs: The HRC and the Weather Underground

Ken Starr - the next addition to the HRC wall of shame?

Ken Starr - the next addition to the HRC wall of shame?

Ok, perhaps it would be better for the HRC if they took a page from the Weather Underground’s playbook, at least they might be getting some attention (this is a joke, I promise). But there are two interesting stories today that I wanted to comment on.

The first is about one way that the HRC is trying to get a little attention.

The HRC’s website links to a wall (it looks a lot like cooliris) that has videos and information about members of the anti-gay lobby who are spreading some untruths about the homosexual lifestyle. The wall (with a catchy title: End the Lies) is aimed at combating the message of fear so valued by our loyal opposition. The best part of the wall: you can add people to it. So, go at it. Find the worst ads and the most offensive pundits and put them on the HRC wall of shame.

Taking a turn, Chicago is the happy home of two old school radicals who are well versed in community involvement: Bill Ayers (of Obama fame) and Bernadine Dohrn (law professor at Northwestern). The San Francisco police officers union is pushing for an investigation into both individuals, former affilaites of the weather underground, in relation to a bombing that killed one police officer and injured eight others.

It’s amazing really, that the union is pushing for an investigation after all this time (with no new evidence, mind you). But what is more amazing is that people are really concerned about the involvement of two adult, functioning and contributing members of society in an ill fated political protest. The aim of our justice system is retribution, yes, but it is also about rehabilitation. No state wants to pay for the incarceration of all inmates indefinitely. Ayers and Dohrn who, by all accounts had nothing to do with the bombing, are important members of the Chicago community. They have committed no crimes and have, instead, dedicated their lives to others.

To the San Francisco police union: you have no reason to suspect them and, even if you did, nothing will be achieved by persecuting them now.

    • I don’t get what connection you’re trying to make, if any.

Are you comparing persecuting Ken Starr for what he’s doing right now with persecuting Ayers for what he did 40 years ago?

    • Ruby-Sachs only skims the surface of the San Francisco police union’s politically inspired attack on Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers. The police union is working in league with a right-wing fringe group, America’s Survival, whose website (http://www.usasurvival.org)
also contains such must-read articles as “Obama Sells U.S. to China Inc.” The police union website and America’s Survival both prominently link Ayers and Dohrn to President Obama; their motive on reviving the old charges against Dohrn and Ayers is clearly to kickstart the old rhetoric about Obama “palling around” with terrorists.

    • If you believe that Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dorhn are nothing more than “important members of the Chicago community” and “have committed no crimes”, then you are most definitely not a student of history. These two people ruined many, many lives, and should have been imprisoned a loooong time ago. Please quit trying to rewrite history.

    • Again I say, we are letting the anti gay groups pool their money on select subjects and areas like California. By doing this, they don’t have to expend their resources and areas to defend their position. That is why it is important that their is a national push in the states where we have seemingly little hope. The south, midwest and cowboy/cowgirl states. Until we bring to their homes, we will not ever get ahead.

First, we need a national pride event similar to the Aussie Marid Gras. This event should be floating. And it should be in places like Columbia, SC, Jackson, MS, Madison, WI. And the rest. THe nations gays going to the heart of the beasts.

Second, the parades for the states outside of the major gay ghettos, need to be in the suburbs and gathering places of the population. Downtown is a ghost town on weekends and parades mean nothing there.

Third, we need to have goal of having an LGBTQ Community Center in the top 100 MSAs in the country. We need a formalized presence everywhere.

Fourth, we need to encourage an exodus to a small population state like Delaware so that we can get Federal Senators, Governor and Judges who are from our community.

Fifth, a March on Washington. The Black Civil Rights movement has had many. So should we.

Sixth, a protest or civil rights march does not include behavior that is unprofessional. That is a pride festival. If we want a true civil rights movement, we act like the professionals that we are in every day life.

If we are serious, then we need to act like it.

    • Thank You Deanin. So Ruby-Sachs, can you tell me how long is too long to look into murder and terrorism?

Ayers has said himself that his only regret is that there were not more bombings. Quite a productive member of the community ehhh?
