Ruby-Sachs: Obama and gay marriage
Thanks for the great comments.
As a follow up: We all hope that Obama will be the next president and many are out there doing something about it. But because he is the better option in a limited political field does not mean we should put our struggle for equal rights aside.
Legally enshrined prejudice is never justified. Obama is the most liberal presidential candidate in a long while. Still, that can’t mean he gets a carte blanche when it comes to discrimination.
Vote for him, but pester him too. Let him know that he is not off the hook just because we like him better than McCain.

Obama has publicly come out against Amendment 8 in California. That in effect means he supports the right of lesbian and gay men to marry their same sex partners in California. So, that means that Obama supports same sex marriage in California.
It will only be a matter of time before Obama “evolves” on this issue to publicly support the right of same sex couples to marry in states where they are currently prohibited from doing so.
This is not a giant leap, this is a big baby step.
