Ruby-Sachs: Nebraska makes a huge mistake

By Emma Ruby-Sachs, 365gay blogger 11.05.2008 1:50pm EST

Nebraska voted to eliminate all affirmative action last night. Looks like the LGBT community isn’t the only group to lose big on election night.

    • Apparently I “don’t understand” affirmative action… apparently African American did not read the part where I said I was a supporter of AA.

And most of what you said doesn’t apply to me. I’m well aware that Obama wasn’t only elected by black people, I voted for him myself in a state where it mattered (and it’s looking like my state of NC will go blue this year in a very tight race, I’m happy to add).

And I know blacks weren’t the only ones who voted for Prop 8 – but they were the race which supported it at the highest rate. Other races ranged from 49-53% in favor… blacks? 70%. You can act like that’s an irrelevant difference, but that’s a pretty big gap.

I’m not trying to perpetuate racism, but I am going to have to agree with Dan Savage and say that homophobic blacks are a bigger problem for gays than racist gays are for blacks.

No god bless – it was belief in god which brought this whole mess about – which is another obvious fact from the exit polls. 90% of non-believers voted against Prop 8 – I would wager that that’s the highest rate out of any group except (openly) gay people.

    • This Comment goes to Both Mario and Ross. Im not trying to be rude at all, but let me explain something. Maybe you are unfamilar with your own state racial make up. The state of Cal. is 55% Mexican 14% Black, 25% White, and 6% other. So for you to comment that Blacks in Cal shouldnt be so quick to vote against same sex marriages, however if you look at the % of blacks in Cal, even if every black person in Cal whether they are gay or straight voted against same sex marriages their numbers arent high enough to make the ban pass. As a BLACK educated gay man I do not support the ban, however ignorance, which is a good it just means (the lack of not knowing) towards Blacks because of the ban passing will not be accepted. And Secondly let me educated you on Affirmative Action since it seems both of you know NOTHING about.. Affirmative Action goes for ALL RACES Black, White, Mexican, Korean, and Chinese..etc. What it simply means it that in a predominate area wether its black, white whatever it offers equalness for other races.. In the state of Georgia where I currently resided.. I am attending an African American Graduate School and there are students might I add white students that are in class next to me due to AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!!! I feel as if it is a mistake for the state of Neb. because it limits people as a whole the fair opp. to achieve something , not just the black race.. Yes Obama is president and like you stated many of his supporters are racist, but the other option really isnt a good option so they chose the best candidate.. Ohh and for Mr. Ross please understand yes your race was murdered for 1500 years and African Americans were being murdered for roughly 500 years understand.. Its not a victimized mindset from African Americans people, and we def. do not feel oppressed!! Second Class Citizenship really??? Thats not ignorant on your behave that just stupid!! Understand that black people are raised to feel and understand things differently! They are very much intune with their history as people, so the hatred that you may see in their eyes really isnt directed to you personally.. its directed to the pain that they have seen in their own race by past events that you or them have no control over..Something that McClain stated in his speech which touched heart.. Maybe by Obama winning it will ease some of the pain in African American hearts. And Im not even a McClain supporter. And Obama is president not because the African American population put him in office.. 66% of his votes came from White people… Your Racial comments towards Black people should cease.. Bc your fighting for the rite to get married to your same sex partner and not to be discriminated against and to be treated equal..but by your comments you are judging the black race and how you feel we view you and ourselfs! Discrimination, Treated Equally!! Please Just for the sake of man kind. Treated everybody the same follow what you PREACH, not just when what you preach benefits YOU!! PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS COMMENT NEGATIVELY TOWARDS THE BOTH OF YOU!! ITS JUST TIME FOR A CHANGE IN..HOW WE TREAT FELLOW AMERICANS WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO DO THE SAME THING AS YOU!!! REGARDLESS OF THEIR SKIN TONE, REGARDLESS OF WHO THEY CHOSE TO LOVE, STAND UP AS ONE, AND NOT SO INDIVIDUALLY.. BC IN THE LONG ONE NO RACE COULD SURVIVE WITHOUT THE OTHER!! GOD BLESS BOTH OF YOU!!

      AFRICAN AMERICAN

    • Mario: I really hope you’re right about black people in Cali rethinking their positions. I don’t see it happening though.

To them we are simply godless, amoral, perverts, whereas they are “the oppressed”. Kidnapped from their homes and relegated to secound-class citizenship, and they’ve been in that position for about 400 years. Mind you WE have been being murdered for 1500. I don’t quite know what black culture would do without the victim mindset. For that matter what would WE do without it?

NOT sorry. AA’s shocked and awed marriage equality in California. There’s something in the Universe called karma.

      ____________________________________________

Karma sure is in the air. If I remember right, 52% of 365gay.com voters supported going forward with ENDA minus gender identity protections for transgender people in one of its polls.

Most of the people who supported going forward with ENDA minus transgender inclusion were the upper end of the gay community (the people who have the most to gain financially by same sex marriage) who live in places such as New York and California.

The people (the ones who supported transgender excluded ENDA) need to just shut their hypocritical mouths and learn to take what they dish! They have no right to bitch!

    • I’m a moderate supporter of affirmative action, and no, Obama’s election does not end racism in any way, shape or form. For that claim to be meaningful, we would have to assume that only a trivial number of the millions and millions of McCain supporters voted against Obama because he was black. And we’d have to ignore the evidence that some Obama supporters were racists who just saw Obama as the lesser evil.

But I did feel a little bit of schadenfreude at the result… if anything good comes out of measures like these (and if the Colorado anti-AA amendment passes) is that perhaps some of the blacks in California who voted against gay marriage might think a little harder about the notion of voting against other people’s civil rights.

    • actually both of you are wrong. with affirmative action disappearing, it give a racist, sexists employer the card not to hire you even if you are highly qualify for the job or promotion. something most was waiting years for it to happen. its not an advantage to anyone. there are Emploers that will not hire you based on your skin color and what’s between your legs. if you think I’m full of air, you must was watching hbo instead of the elections. We have to be as a group in order to get something done. If some won’t give gays certain rights, what makes you think they will give you a chance for the color of your skin? Stripping gay rights is just a cover of what they really want to do? We are slowly going backwards as a whole and sad not too many people are seeing it.

    • Obviously, since we have now elected the first black president, the need for affirmative action is over. Now we really do have a color blind society.

    • Wrong, Ruby-Sachs. Affirmative action is crap. It treats people as groups instead of as individuals. Fighting discrimination with discrimination is not the answer. The right way to eliminate glass ceilings is to fix the shitty american public education system. Solidifying the civil rights of everyone is another important step. And don’t think I’m saying this as a privileged person. I’m half black, half asian, gay, and female. I am a radical leftist, but I do not support affirmative action at all.

  • Josh Elder Said: November 5th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
    • How is ending Affirmative Action a bad thing? It’s fighting discrimination with discrimination and I’ve supported AA’s elimination for years.
How is giving an individual an advantage, due to their race, a good thing? Simply means you’re disadvantaging others. Why not just look at everyone equally?
