Ruby-Sachs: Ms. California and Trump

By Emma Ruby-Sachs, 365gay blogger 05.12.2009 12:42pm EDT

I just finished watching the press conference where Miss California was told she would be permitted to keep her crown. It was an interesting play – first a clear, if not typically Donald, statement by the Trump himself and then a pleasant acknowledgement of the Miss California pageant staff (who were stood up by Ms. Prejean at their last photo shoot).

But then Prejean got to the microphone.

Now, it is my understanding that beauty pageants are about beautiful girls saying nice things that please everyone. Prejean has been all up in arms about the “politically charged” question she got at the pageant that indicated a “personal agenda.”

But when handed the microphone at the press conference, she went on her own political rant about how marriage as defined as a union between a man and a woman is what the President believes and is the right thing to believe. She then goaded Donald Trump when he had the good sense not to state his own opinion about gay marriage. She handled herself like a bullied school girl and went on a rant against Perez Hilton and the mysterious “personal agenda.”

Well, Ms. Prejean, the personal agenda you are so upset about is a campaign for basic civil rights. And the attacks that you are so upset about focused on your statement that you did not pose for any nude pictures and the subsequent release of nude pictures from photo shoots spanning over five years. Oh, and no one was very pleased when you blew off a Miss California photo shoot and also decided to become a spokeswoman for the National Organization for Marriage.

The fact is that today’s press conference exemplified the reasons why Ms. Prejean is a bad spokeswoman for young woman, for residents of California and it exemplifies why she does not understand the simple political tactic of pleasing and representing divergent views.

I regret that Donald Trump kept Ms. Prejean on as Miss California. But I am quite pleased that Ms. Prejean, today, illustrated all the reasons why she is exactly as inarticulate, unfocused, undiplomatic and childish as we all assumed.

    • The photo of Miss California USA is a seminude photo and every won knows it, here is the definition for seminude, only partially clothed: posed seminude for a painter; seminude statues. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/seminude, What Mr. Trump said is complete out of line, coming form a gay man I think every person has the right to say what they wont to say but no won has the right to brake the law or a rule.

    • “I don’t agree with her, but she was thrown head first into this battle by hilton who called her every name in the book.”

Perhaps, but she is the one responsible for her actions thereafter. No one forced her to keep speaking to the media about the issue, and no one forced her to become involved with NOM. Hilton is to blame for his own actions, not Prejean’s. She should have just walked away from this mess when she had the chance.

    • Sorry to say but California is more Mississippi than Massachusetts.

    • I found it very sad when she mentioned she was unable to read a 12 page contract that she signed herself. Implying it was too much to read or too hard to read? Either way, i would’ve read it to her… or maybe someone else could’ve? 12 pages isn’t too much.
But, it was the most disgusting sexist stupid press conference I’d ever seen in my life.
She was totally bullied by that fat wad Hilton and he gave her more fame than she previously had, sans the miss america thing that is…

    • Vanessa Williams did not get to keep her crown under similar circumstances. A double standard is at play.

I think Vanessa should get her title back or Prejean should have hers taken too. Fairness is lacking.

Perez Hilton should not have referred to Prejean as a Stupid Bitch. His rant was unacceptable. That question leaves even the most educated and prepared politicians sounding stupid….to include President Obama.

Hilton should be banned from being a judge for his rant. Generally, women do not like to hear another women being called a Bitch.

Now, thanks to Hilton he has given NOM their new star to put in their tv adds. So, who was really the less intelligent one?

    • I forgot to mention. The part where Carrie mentioned she did say “no offence”, as if to suggest that it makes everything one says after that okay.

    • Here is my favourite comment, aside from the twaddle praising God and her grampa who fought in the war—

“I want to encourage them to maintain their integrity and not concede their values to what they see or hear going on around them. It is this mission that I will incorporate to my Miss California-USA duties, as that pageant has embraced my message of recognizing and respecting diversity.”

How does one recognize and respect diversity, by blocking perception of the world around him or her??

    • In my opinion she sounds like a sore loser.

    • Having seen Trump in action on his show, it doesn’t surprise me that he kept her on. He frankly gives people way too much credit, despite his reputation. Remember that moron who Trump gave the opportunity (hint hint) to share his win on the finale one season? “It’s not called The Apprenti, it’s called The Apprentice”, he said. Trump should have fired him right then, just like he should have fired Carrie today, and for exactly the same reason: You act like a complete jerk while representing me, you’re gone.

    • JP…my thought exactly! With talking heads like these (Rush, Steele, Joe the non-plumber, Michelle Bachman, etc) they are making it a no-brainer in the next several election cycles. Keep it up GOP! We’re loving you!

    • I think it’s fantastic that Carrie Prejean is the new spokesperson for the National Organization for Marriage, because every time she opens her uneducated illiterate mouth, she highlights how completely ludicrous they really are.

    • I am glad that Carrie Prejean did not lose her crown. She is allowed her opinion, even though I do not agree with it. Her actions since the pageant are inexcusable and show the self centered nature of her real being.

    • Come on people,, look at it objectively; she was a victim of a scum sucking bully who doesn’t seem to attack guys but only women. I don’t agree with her, but she was thrown head first into this battle by hilton who called her every name in the book. Had he not done that,, this would have been a non issue, but thanks to him it’s now a major issue that has ignited the opposition. He’s lucky, had she been my niece or dauthter, it wouldn’t matter that i was gay, he wouldn’t be involved in this anymore.
