Ruby-Sachs: Meghan McCain Obsessed
Ever since the McCain daughter was interviewed on Rachel Maddow, my friends have been obsessed. They follow her on Twitter, they catch up on her television appearances at work. They talk about how hot she is over lunch and on gchat.
I’m wondering what all the fuss is about. I mean, she’s a Republican. And, though she may be smart, her political experience is just beginning, shaped mostly by family connections.
But this recent interview on Larry King made it click. Meghan is a young reasonable Republican who thinks getting all fired up about gay marriage is a waste of time. Her support for an open policy on spousal benefits is, according to her, because of her youth and her desire to break from the old men in charge (read, dad).
Is this an indication of things to come? I hope so. I’d much rather be arguing with the right about fiscal policy than whether I’m allowed basic equal rights because I happen to be in love with another woman.

Let’s hope it’s of things to come for the next generation of the GOP! We can only hope.
Will, no, my Republican friends and co-workers are friendly, pleasant and STILL vote for politicians who want to deny me civil rights!
Like I said, legislative behavior matters in this discussion. While they often “sympathize” intellectually with gay rights issues in practice they rarely, if ever, challenge their party on these issues.
Back before WWII there were plenty of Jews in Germany that had “friends” that went on to support the Nazis.
Replying to Daniel, RE: “someone … might think Republicans are nicer than …”
Seriously Daniel, my Republican friends ARE a LOT nicer than any of my Democrat friends!!
And if yours aren’t, your crowd is much too narrow. You should spread yourself out a bit more and seek more diversity than your own current set of clones!
This sort of thing can, and does, happen to some conservatives. Just not usually American ones.
For example, a lot of British Tory politicians have become gay-friendly (including party leader David Cameron) or come out as openly gay (Alan Duncan, Nick Herbert) in recent years. Brit gays thus now have the option of voting based on issues besides gay rights.
However, Meghan is still very much a minority among Republicans, and her views are substantially to the Left of her own father. Keep in mind that McCain supported Proposition 8, even though he hypocritically said that he believed that the issue should be “left to the states” and he himself is not from California. So clearly he was speaking out of both sides of his mouth on that one.
In a way, Meghan could even be problematic for us, because she can help create the impression that the GOP is more moderate than it really is. Indeed, she herself has been the target of Right-wing fembots Ann Coulter and Laura Ingham, who don’t tolerate any whiff of liberalism in their party!
But someone who doesn’t listen to Laura or Ann but sees Meghan on Larry King might think that Republicans are nicer than their legislative behaviors suggest.
