Ruby-Sachs: Lambert’s Performance

I am not the kind of person who watches the AMA awards. Television and I are in a hate phase of a love-hate relationship. That said, after every top ten radio station was going on and on about Lambert’s video, I had to open the computer and check it out.

My conclusion: If Lambert hadn’t kissed that boy, no one would care about that performance.

When I was in college, I went to see a Brittany Spears concert where she performed “I’m a Slave For You.” Amidst all the fire throwers and nakedness, there were a ton of dancers in leather outfits, some of whom, I’m sure, were on leashes. And the crotch rub? Puhlease. I’ve seen Madonna do that a hundred times.

The point is that oversexualized performances are the norm. Maybe television has a slightly higher standard, but if you look at the video cuts, the moment the camera really decides to pan out and get rid of this crazy guy, is right after he kisses the guitar player.

Lambert is going to continue to push the envelope, I have do doubt. But I worry about how live television will react to the mounting backlash. Complaints are in the thousands now, but could become more worrisome if the numbers grow.

That said, Lambert got one more viewer to check out the AMA. So that’s a good thing, right? (NBC, are you out there?)

    • It does not shock me that people are complaining about the boy kiss. The general public is not ready for gay marriage, they definitely are not ready to watch boys kiss on national television.

    • 366gay are your stupid? When a strait man refers to a grown Woman as his “girl” or his “girlfriend” would you accuse him of being a pedophile or promoting pedophilia as well?

Grow-up 366gay everyone with even half a brain (even people who didn’t see the show) knew that he was kissing a consenting ADULT Male and yes adult white males of a certain age are called boy sometimes.

Why did the word “boy” stick out on your mind? Are you having personal issues that you and licensed therapist should dealing with? If so, get help before its too late. What you are feeling is not a “gay thing” it is a mental health issue

Of all the places that you could choose to express your bigotry hatred for your fellow American Citizens( normal LGBT People) because we were not BORN like you, why do you have to do it here?

    • It’s not the kiss that was the issue, but the grinding of the guy’s head in his crotch, dragging him around on a leash. My child was in the room and I had to rush to turn the t.v. off.

It’s clear that Adam did all of this for ratings. He sang off-key though and it was overall a poor performance.

    • I loved it. I thought it was very sexy. If people have a problem with this, then we need to consider stopping all of the girl-on-girl action. I’m sick of the fake lesbians/bisexual females, but I guess that’s a separate issue.

    • AL knew he was on network TV, not cable-as with Madonna and Brittney- and purposefully attempted to shock people. No one is neccesarily shocked by him kissing a guy. We have seen him do that a million times. I do, however, think there was an overwhelming sense of despair for those working towards equal rights. Many of the stereotypes that anti-gay supporters use is that of the promiscous gay male, who embibes in deviant behavior. A lot of legislation has been based in these stereotypes-marriage and adoption rights. Every day I am working to change that perception to stop hate/bias crimes and sexual assault. AL didn’t express himself in a shocking way-we have all seen it before-just in a disappointing way.

    • In my neck of the woods, Adam Lambert’s performance was on approximately 10:50pm EST and my children where in bed sleeping, where all children should be at that hour. Interesting how the corruption of children keeps coming up about same sex marriage and now Adam Lambert’s performance. Must be a gay connection there.
Adam’s sensual yet somewhat erotic fantasy music performance was no more racier than Adam’s female contemporary’s music performances that usually contain crotch grabbing, humping, grinding, thrusting, ass slapping, booty shaking, running their hands over their body parts and oh yes, openly kiss a man or a woman and sometimes some female performers have even used whips and chains and dressed in leather attire. Sexual gestures do sell in the music industry but if it’s gay, no way?
Adam Lambert did nothing wrong except he went where no gay man has ever gone, he went public with an out of the closet gay/bi fantasy performance most straight people cannot accept unless it’s performed by heterosexuals. This is without a doubt a representation filled with nothing but double standards.

    • It’s really not that serious and i was P.O. when i woke up to the radio and they were comparing girls kissing as being ok and guys kissing as being just gross. WTF is all I have to say he did a lot more than kiss a guy and that seems to be the focal point of the conversation.

  • DJAlexander89 Said: November 24th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
    • In my experience and yes i have acted it out. A lot of gay/bi men really are kind of slutty but then again men in general are promiscuous so who’s really shocked here?

    • Let’s just agree to disagree. AL made a decision, it is his right to perform as he sees fit. So, fine him like they did JT and Janet and get over it. Who cares? People are still homeless and hungry and we have larger issues to deal with than if an entertainer crossed a line. Madonna is known for rewriting the boundaries.

Except it was a live broadcast so it was only 7:50 on the west coast (but supposedly the cut some of it out because they show it on a ten minute bias after JT and Jaunts nipple gate during the super bowl) so there the where most likely kids up (thought what parent in their right mind lets their kids watch the AMA i don’t know, as most all music videos say for country are way way over sexualized. most all look like they are moments away from braking into an orgy or something nasty like that)

    • I’m sorry but really. This is what Americans find bothersome and worthy of complaint and scandal. Good God, is your country truly that backward?…..rhetorical question by the way. In Canada, Europe and many others, Lamberts display would be considered interesting but that’s about it. Just like the whole Janet Jackson affair, this is but a tempest in a teapot. I confess that I am not surprised by the Holy Rollers (most of whom are bigger pervs than gays could ever be) and social conservatives who seem more concerned about sexuality than whether the poor are helped, children are educated or anything more important. If this keeps up, America will a laughing stock…..oh wait, too late. Sorry guys, but you really do need a collective enema….seriously.

    • Right on analysis! I picked up on that immediately. For one thing, too long. For another, too passionate. The evangelicals were enraged and the papists were masturbating in the confessionals.

    • I think it could of been more tastefully done.A gentle kiss, less leather, more suggestive maybe. But I give adam credit for pushing the envelope, here’s a man that loves to shock.

    • My problem with his performance was not the dancers or the kiss, as has been said we’ve seen all that before a hundred times, although with female performers. I find it unfortunate that his singing was not the best and he screamed far too much. In a night full of terrible performances (what a tragedy the whole night was) he could have really knocked it out of the park with his vocals and ben THE performer of the evening, he didn’t. Janet was a nightmare, J Lo lip synced badly and fell on her ass and Whitney’s song has a melody but she’s so busy taking us up and down the scale with every word I couldn’t find it. Maybe it was excitement or nerves, but if his performance had been amazing the rest of his act wouldn’t have gotten this much attention. But his vocals were shaky and the dancing and antics over shadowed his talent so we were left with a contrived performance. Live and learn Adam. Welcome to show business.
