Todd, he doesn't care.

What have so many of us been saying for so many months. BARACK OBAMA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT GAY PEOPLE.

How can you make it more clear?

How about Obama step up to the plate right now and say something about what has happened with all of the state constitutions being amended to prohibit gay marriages?

Honestly, it looks like he just doesn't care now. If he really did care he would be saying something NOW about it - you know like a genuine reaction to what has happened. Wasn't his campaign about change and not business as usual?

Obama had better step up to the plate in the next four years or he will not be receiving my vote even if it requires me to not cast a vote!

well after reading all this I must say I'm glad I''m Canadian. Gay marriage has been legal for a couple of years now and people have grown accustomed to it , there is still some homophobia and the usual problems with jerks but gays have equality in the eyes of the law .The USA professes to be the freest land in the world, the land of liberty hmmm maybe if your straight eh!

I had to come here and post (and rant a bit). I am a straight, white female veteran in Silicon Valley and I feel just as outraged by this vote as you do. I was so angry last night that I couldn't sleep and couldn't work today.

When I think of the 7 years of military service I gave to this country to safeguard and support the civil rights of all citizens, and all of the times I have supported the Democratic party because of their supposed plank of civil rights for all, it makes me want to gag.

You can choose to overlook or excuse the ignorance of black and hispanic voters - I cannot. I lost my family and my town because I championed civil rights in a fundie WASP enclave. I was laughed out of town - I lost everything because of my inclusive, human-centric beliefs.

When I think of the grief I suffered to fight for the rights of blacks, hispanics, even illegal immigrants, I cannot forgive their selective abandonment of the basic principles of social justice. I will not forgive.

I will never again support any legislation that favors blacks, hispanics, or immigrants in any fashion. I am done fighting for the rights of these ingrates. Don't they realize that all of you just want the same things they want - equal treatment and protection under the law? How simple is this concept?

It's a good thing that blacks and hispanics did not have to win their civil rights freedom from a popular vote - they would still be fighting today for even basic recognition. I think them traitors to the Constitution and to all of those who fought and died for their rights in years past and their ignorance and homophobia do not excuse them.

I never fought for white people's rights - didn't have to - most of them have never suffered from discrimination. I can't excuse the fundie religious intolerance either but I have learned from experience that there is no changing it. I am still estranged from my family 27 years later because they won't accept me unless I profess belief in their religion.

I know that eventually, LGBT rights will be won and that this vote does not matter from a historical perspective. The day will be won! I will be crying and rejoicing on that day - with all of you - my fellow human beings - who have been resigned until then to live as second-class citizens.

But right now, I am so angry I could punch someone!

Blacks had to fight to get their rights, so has every other minority in history. We have got to stop thinking that Joe the bigot is going to just wake up one day and care about us. We have got to fight and fight now.
The results yesterday amounted to a hard shot across the bow of our rights. To slink away quietly is no less than cowardice.
The time is now to rise up and make our numbers and our power known.

These losses are devastating and there are penty of directions in which to point the blame. I am simply disgusted by the notion that we put peoples rights up for popular vote - that's not what the founding fathers intended. What has happened is a perversion of the constitutional process. Nonetheless, the fight must go on. Don't sit silently or only commiserate with friends, tell all those around you how you feel and put a face on who these anti-gay measures are hurting. Don't accept those who say we'll just have to agree to disagree. NO! There are some universal ethical and moral truths. We are Americans and we DEMAND equality. Given the slim margin of the California loss, I can't help feeling that we may be seeing the cresting of the far right's ability to assault us and win. Look at the age demographics - enemies of equality are dying off - the faster the better.

Before everybody gets too carried away blaming minority voters for the passage of Prop 8, it's worth considering that of the 17 California counties that are 75% or more white, 15 counties voted for Prop 8. Maybe we ought to patch up the wholes in our greenhouse first before throwing more stones.
