Ruby-Sachs: Election Day and Dixville Notch
This morning, a Barack Obama phone tree woke me up at quarter to four. I was expecting it, had gone to bed even before Rachel Maddow, but strangely I am exhausted.
It might have something to do with the noisy texts and phone messages I got from friends letting me know that Dixville Notch, NH went blue at 12:15am. They haven’t voted for a Democrat since 1968. In 2004, George W. Bush got 19 votes to Kerry’s 7.
With only 21 registered voters in the town, it is hardly a coup. But I’m hopeful that the little New Hampshire area that stays up so late to get into the morning news is an indicator of things to come. I used to think that campaigning in Indiana was simply a tactic to keep the Republicans on defense in their own turf. Now, I am hopeful that we will actually win the state.
I’m off to get ready for the day, but will post an update after the first shift.
