Lowenstein: Schumer comes out for gay marriage

The New York Daily News is reporting that at a private dinner last night with gay leaders, NY Senator Chuck Schumer came out in favor of gay marriage and a full repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.
When asked to confirm his changed position on these two issues, Schumer’s office released a statement that said:
“It’s time. Equality is something that has always been a hallmark of America and no group should be deprived of it. New York, which has always been at the forefront on issues of equality, is appropriately poised to take a lead on this issue.”
While it would have been nice to have had the Senator’s support back when he voted for DOMA and argued that marriage was only between a man and a woman, it’s always exciting to hear that a leader’s opinion on equality has evolved.
I hope now that Senators Schumer and Gillibrand have joined Governor Paterson in supporting full marriage equality, we will see strides forward for the gay community in New York.
