Lowenstein: “And I’m afraid” that the NOM response videos are hysterical

By Jenna Lowenstein, 365gay blogger 04.15.2009 9:13am EDT

By now everyone has seen the rather ridiculous and over-the-top video that the National Organization for Marriage released at the end of last week. The video has been roundly mocked on the internets, and several industrious individuals took on the challenge to remix or make parodies for our general entertainment.

Unfortunately, NOM was less than pleased, and has had many of the derivative videos removed from YouTube for copyright infringement.

But here are the best of the rest– the top three response videos to the “Storm” video. Enjoy!

3. Gathering Storm Chasers

It’s possible I only like this video because I’ve wanted to be a Storm Chaser since Twister hit theatres in the mid-90s. But the reference to Dopplar Gaydar makes it worth a watch.

2. The Gathering Storm

From the good folks at Sadly, No! this video is based on the premise that the original just wasn’t scary enough. With the addition of some campy terrifying elements like rubber monster masks, graveyard images, and creepy fonts, it’s definitely taken the original fear-mongering to a new level.

1. Gathering Storm Spoof

The best video response to the NOM video came from the touring cast of the Broadway show Mary Poppins. Is anyone surprised?

This video is awesome, it warns good, God-fearing Americans about the storm that’s brewing, a storm that could cause whole families to be “washed away by the wiles of Satan and his dark army of homos.” Even scarier, it warns, our male children could start playing with dolls, our female children could become vegetarians, and our wives could want to leave the home– to go to college!

It’s parody of the original hinges on its accuracy. Like the NOM video, this one has cheesy actors obviously reading off cue cards, forced and phony diversity, and a number of unfortunate acronyms. Check it out, you won’t be sorry.

(Also, if by some chance you missed the original video, you can watch it here on HRC’s YouTube channel.)

    • I’d find these three completely hilarious if it weren’t for my concern that the “kill a queer for Christ” crowd will think they’re all serious.

    • Absolutely hilarious! 2nd one was THE BEST! Hands down!!

    • Very fun!

    • The 2nd parody is no better than the ad itself. The same week a 11 year-old commits suicide for being labelled gay by bullies we are asked to laugh at an ad that labels people the same things the bullies said. Sad.

    • I sort of agree with Sean. But what makes me able to laugh is knowing that not laughing and taking these morons seriously is just another victory for them. We have to keep humor (especially since it seems like even bigger problems are on their way) and we have to just know that history has a long line of dicks. Nazis, Manifest Destiny assholes who killed countless numbers of Native Americans, confederates, etc. Although it will most likely not be pretty, at least at the end of it- we’ll be the victors. Everyone called abolishionists crazy and ‘zealot leftists’ and look what happened there. These people are no better than whining plantation owners during the Civil War.

    • Haha, I do enjoy a good parody from time to time, especially of morons!

…come to think of it, what is the original ad trying to do? It’s trying to invoke terror in the audience. And that brings me to my point: these people are terrorists. Trying to get something done by invoking fear in people is an act of terrorism, irregardless if it involves no violence.
