I find it weird that people here would think that just because you use a4a or gay.com, or even see a hot guy or two, that you would want to refrain from having sex. That goes right back to assuming that all homosexuals are sex addicts, lol. I was deployed last year to Afghanistan, and believe me, I saw a lot of cute men there. There was not a clear way for me to discern who was gay or not. However, if I didn't have much of a brain or didn't know better, I'd had assumed more than half of the male half of the U.S. military there were gay, since I often recieved stares that seemed to follow me, and in many cases, soldiers standing within inches of me with no breathing space or wiggle room between my butt and their front. I wore my rifle on my back and they wore theirs on their front. If I bent slightly or turned, I'd hear the all too familiar clank of our rifles... hmm... wonder why. There was no place to even fain the thought of sex. No one had their own room unless they were E-9s, high ranking civilians or high ranking officers. I can only imagine how different Iraq could be. I'm awaiting deployment myself, and for a year (looking forward to it) and even though I use those two sites, I only hope to find friends. The internet is all many people have to reach out to other gay people. It's not like you can just walk up to someone and just start casually blabbing on about your true desires. Life is not all about hook ups. And it's sad that it's so rare to find other people who feel the same way. When you get past all of the one nighters, you get to see what life is really about. However, oe thing to remember, it's not for everyone. Another thing, it's hard enough living around people who would be bigotted towards you if they knew. It really does make time go by much easier when you are around people you can be yourself with.

[...] is just as fascinating as the topics Mr. Duffy brings attention to. On his most recent post, How gay soldiers find each other, Duffy explores the false belief that Gays are anymore promiscuous than our straight counterpart. [...]

Michael, lol, I am a fan of your blog and a supporter of yours. I just find it hard to swallow that you refrain from sex is all.

Funny though how all of my messages in support of you seemed to go unnoticed and the one comment I make that I was not in agreement gets noticed?

I was worried I wouldn't hear from you Shane- and no I don't have access to a4a- or that yahoo group i mentioned. Other soldiers in other areas do not have their internet access as restricted.
It's interesting how those who are commenting have very different experiences. Thanks for sharing.

Unless you have served in the military for longer than an afternoon meeting at a reserve facility to comment on how we, as military men and women, reacted to being gay in a very st8t environment is smoke blowing out of your love canal. Being stupid is once thing, but to open your mouth and remove all doubt is somewhat stupid. Oh my, I repeat myself.

As a 20 year vetern of the Navy, gay sailors will always find other gay sailors on ship, usually for friendships, sometimes for sex. In forgein posts it is usually very easy to fine local gays also. "Gaydar" isn't switched off upon enlistment.
