Wow. Interesting story. The first guy to tell me that “All fags should die” was also the first one to break my heart.

Duffy – First, thank you for your service. Secondly, thank you for your insights. As a gay veteran, I understand your situation. I personally encountered unbelievable ignorance, prejudice and homophobia during my time in the service, but I also witnessed understanding, compassion and deep friendship that sustained me. Ultimately, I decided that DADT was too much of a compromise and I left. But, that freed me to speak openly about its repeal. It is my sincere hope that it is repealed in time for you to provide the ultimate object lesson to your less than enlightened compatriots by living openly and honestly as a gay soldier (or Marine or Sailor or Air Force dude). Keep us posted.

I just started reading your blog today while researching gays in the military. I’m so glad I stumbled across your expereinces, so real, vivid, and striking. You and others like you are so brave for having the courage to deal with what you do on a daily basis. The conversation may not have taken the direction that a lot of people feel it should, but as a fellow psychologist I fully understand the implications of simply getting them to recount positive experiences with gays and lesbians can have. It’s not hard to understand how some people can completely miss how empowering that moment was for you when the soldier went from spewing violent hate one minute to expressing commonality with a gay man the next. These things take time and so much understanding to reverse this mindset. The more its talked about the better chance that you’ll be able to go one set further the next time the issue is touched. It can even cause them to think and question their internal hatred that is obviously based on bigotry since personal experience certainly isn’t guiding these thoughts.

The U.S. Military: A nice safe refuge for bigots of ALL colors and creeds. A not so safe refuge for the sad and unfortunate ultra masculinist homos(fakes). Thank you for posting this. I was in a relationship for several years with a guy in the Navy and I can tell you that it is not an easy thing to know what to say and when you can say it. I suppose it is b/c I have been out for over 12 years that this type of thing does not surprise me…however, what does surprise me is the “anti-military” people out there. This country is far from perfect but ultimately we enjoy the freedoms that we do have b/c of those men and women who have fought and sometimes given their lives to protect those rights we enjoy.

History repeating itself, Blacks, Women
etc. went through these ignorance parallels. Hopefully we will evolve beyond this soon.
Will Pres. Obama show decisive leadership ? Pres. Harry Truman did in 1948. Will Obama punk out and become the enemy like Bill Clinton with DADT (1993) and DOMA (1996).
Set us back */- 20 years.
