The Department of Justice has hired Matt Nosanchuk, a gay attorney, to be a part of its Civil Rights division.

The move has been widely seen as a way to smooth relations between the Obama White House and the LGBT community, and to defuse some of the anger over the DOJ continuing to defend the Defense of Marriage Act as a matter of policy.

    • Ohhhh boy. Be careful, Mr President, because you better not eff this one up. I wanna know why a “liaison” is needed–are American gays like some vaguely alien subspecies? It’s clear that somebody sees that this administration has made a stunning mess whenever it addresses gay issues. Hiring a “liaison” doesn’t change policy, and makes me suspect that somebody thinks that the building gay displeasure with Obama can be deflected onto this person. It may be a savvy move given Obama’s pathetic track record with gays (and DO NOT start on about how Bush was so much worse–it’s NOT RELEVANT), but my first instinct is to be suspicious of the motives behind this.

    • What good is a “liaison”? He needs to change his policy and stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act. If my marriage is not recognized in VA when it comes to vote for or against him, I will be voting against him.

    • I typically agree with you Drewski, but to me this appears to be quite positive. Public liaisons (with some genuine power) around the country appear to have done some real good. Of course it’s meaningless in the sense that if a GOP’er comes back in ‘12 he’ll be out the door before the oath of office is finished.

    • “By putting a gentleman like Matt Nosanchuk in there,” he said, “they are insulting real civil-rights laws and the people that have struggled in the history of our country due to race, color and creed.” (Joe Giganti)(If I followed the short blurb correctly)
God forbid we should add Sexual Orientation to the list. Because it took so fucking long for all those other civil rights movements to garner YOUR respect. If you were speaking forty years ago, you’d be insulting them yourself. I have no doubt about it. You are in your own generation of ignorance, that’s the only difference between now and then and us and them.
