Louis,

You gonna pick shit with me, get it Straight. I NEVER said I was NOT OUT and NOT LOVED, ACCEPTED HERE IN NOLA! I love my city and State but it doesnt change the TRUTH about how the MAJORITY OF PEOPLE HERE ARE LIKE. I said that as NICE as the people try to act in your face, when they get in the Ballot Boxes they VOTE against us! IF that is not true, then you would have marriage equality and protections here.

You must be the Uptown Upper Queer crust, probably "Log Cabin Republican" who Loves "Bobby Jindal" no doubt!

Does your Boston Marriage apply in LA? NO, SO PLEASE!

You can be a lawyer and judge I could give a rat's ass! You still don't have a LEGAL MARRIAGE IN LOUISIANA! PERIOD!

And the PISS ANT DP (Domestic Partnership, only for Orleans Parish, basically a registry) crap is nothing, if it was, Why did you go to Boston to marry?

you know what, please don't answer, because truthfully I could care less.

I was born and raised and out and proud in NOLA too, but again, the truth is the truth, so you get a grip Ms Thang!

I live in what is referred to as the "Buckle" of the Bible belt. I have Domestic Partenr benefits at work and a non-discrimination policy also. This is the first job I have had that offers these two things.
That doesn't make it perfect but I do appreciate it. I have been known to overhear slurs and remind the people using them that we have a non-discrimination clause and that if I ever hear those words again I will personally escort them to our Human Resources department. I haven't had to but wonder what would happen if I did, lol. WE don't have a zero tolerance clause so I am not sure if a warning would be given or even what would happen. I've shut a few people up and even had conversations with a few of them since. My partner accepted a temp job however and they told him not to return after the first day because they do not allow facial hair, lol! WTF is that all about.

Things happen all over. Staying secretive about yourself is a personal choice. The more people that do actually "come out" and let people see well adjusted gay people, the better off we'll all be. Every positive person people say sways the swayable and reinforces those who will never change anyhow. After the next generation dies of old age the world will be completely different. All the stats indicate that it is primarily older people that have the bias more than any other leading factor. Hate to see them go but their ideas will die with them. Oh, it won't be gone. It will just become less and less with each new generation. Just like everything else.

I appreciated your article and agreed with your take on things in South Louisiana. It's not a gay paradise by any stretch; but it's not a bad life, either.

I live in Houma and have out gay friends who teach in the public school system with no problems and out gay friends in fairly influential positions in the local government and business community who are well respected. I've never had anybody make a derogatory comment about me or any of my friends - at least, to my face.

Now, would Houma have been that way thirty years ago? I don't really know the answer to that. The vast majority of people here are salt of the earth, good folks who are pretty open to having their worldviews changed. I'm just glad to know many of them and help them view gays in a different light than the one portrayed by theocons like James Dobson.

It takes time, my friends. Who would have thought even two years ago that gay marriage would be legalized in five states? We'll get where we should be - and, while it won't be soon enough, it'll happen. The tides have turned.

It's kinda like that here in WV - but you know, it gives me a good feeling to know that my partner of 7 years and I are not alone. I've found that it is true there is power (and safety) in numbers.

We have to keep our wits about us, to protect and thrive among the half-wits.

To LOUIS: Puhlease!!! NOLA is in a different country than Lafayette..or anywhere in Bible belt. LOVE NOLA it is a uniquely American cosmopolitan city. But the black/white thing there is still hideous!
Almost complete social segregation!
And as Cody mentions, any city with 'arts' especially music... may always have a more 'out' gay group, simply because they have another STRONG support group to belong to that will defend them.

Get a grip, people. I was born and raised in NOLA and am still here. I have been out for 28 years, as an attorney for all that time, and am now a judge. My present colleagues and office workers have no problem with me or my "lifestyle." My partner and I were married in Boston a couple of months ago and received gifts and well wishes from all. I sit on various non-profit boards and a city commission and there is no issue with gayness. The political and legal communities are quite active in NOLA and anti-GL discrimination is not an issue. We have educated the politicians over the years and the earlier comment about the DR registry is erroneous. Check facts first before speaking. The DP law is intact as is the Human Rights Ordinance passed by our City Council in the early 90's. I don't know where Jeezus! Said hangs out, but I don't understand his invective. I think your new blogger is doing a great job.

This is not a Southern thing. Many, many people here in New England "tolerate" us but don't want us near their children, in their schools or running businesses. Try having a corporate career and you'll quickly learn where people think you are best used. I always get labelled "creative", "inclusive leader", "team builder". Sounds like motherhood qualities....and glass ceiling comes to mind.

I'm engaged in a long term online discussion with a bunch of anti-marriage bigots in Vt, MA and ME given the progress there and the local coverage. These people clearly believe they are pro-equality, but think it is ok to deny us equal rights such as marriage equality. They put us in a different category, a group wanting special rights to legitimize our relationships.

One bigot keeps saying all we care about is the money...he is comfortable discriminating against us in tax matters, and tries to box us into a corner around just "love" issues, which he claims are not our motivation. Of course MONEY is part of our motivation for equality, but not thinking us to be 100% human, he can make that description.

Sure, New England has companies (mine included) that offered benefits before marriage equality was won. But they don't often say sexual orientation in their anti discrimination policies (my company, recently purchased by the Saudi's, now does..how ironic!).

Point being that while I'm sure it is harder in Louisiana, it is not perfect here. Until all of our neighbors, community leaders and coworkers see no difference in us, we will not be fully equal.

And in the meantime we should be focusing on religion, which teaches people to believe what they do. It is 100% religion that is our enemy in this fight.

Well Keith, I am in New Orleans, Native to be exact... and where are you sipping on your "cuppa latte"?

This is one of the most backwards, hypicritical, bigoted States in the country. Period. Why is that so bad to know and accept the truth? The first step in solving a problem is the face it, accept it and then work to resolve it.

I believe that I have the right to have a Love/Hate relationship with my home State, town, country. I don't live behind Rose colored glasses or maybe I have just lived longer and experienced more.

I said in my earlier post and will continue to say it until LA and the south gets equality...

Being Polite to my face and then stabbing me in the back is not getting us Equality. They aren't that polite in LA anyways, at least not in New Orleans.

Moreover, When you walk out of your home getting called "Faggot white bitch" doesn't seem like nice people...

“Conservatives” and “Christian Taliban” don’t vote for LGBT Equality!

Tony, you and I might work for the same parent company.

Obviously, I'm out at work, too. And I'm protected as well by an anti-discrimination policy here. But there's been zero mention of my blogging here around our office -- and while I don't need a pat on the back, I do wonder if one of our sports writers were to land a blogging spot at, sat, espn.com, we might hear a little about it.
