Thanks Cody for this article. I have been following this issue in our backwards state. I love my home of Louisiana however I get the feeling that my home does not love me back. As a poz lesbian I fear that the stigmas to my minorities will just get worst here in LA. I have contacted my state representatives; however word on the horn is that this bill will pass. A sad time for us and our state.

This takes an employers' rights away. If I own a pharmacy that sells birth control and one of my clerks or pharmacists refused to cotnribute to the transaction, I would fire them. How can the law make me become a bigoted business?

Perhaps it could maybe in a twisted world apply at the provider level, but the individual clerk? Do you go to the next line? Do they have a line that says "bigot manning register at this line"?

Regardless of intent, it is obvious the authors of this law haven't thought it through since it really is going to create chaos in many situations.

Again, a health care facility refusing to do abortions...ok, I can see that. But then the doctor gets hit with "the light" one weekend and only some patients get their procedures done?

This is insane.

Anyone with friends/relatives in Louisiana better get on the phone quick as our voice of reason needs to be heard.

I (we) from LA are quite aware, as much as I want to be insulted by what some of my fellow LGBT brothers and sisters are writing about US here in LA and SOUTH, I just can't, because sadly so much of it is true!

Thanks to Bud and others who are writing and calling our VERY CREAPY governor (Male version of Palin), senators, house of reps., as I call and write others in all the other States. This affects us all! We have to pay it forward.

I say again and will say til I die the root of all of this is in Religion, Ignorance and Fear of course.

I have a very loving and accepting family, but they will NOT for the love of "their" God, let go of the Catholic Church. When you are brainwashed for so long, its too hard. This feeling in the south is across ALL RACIAL lines, cultures, etc.

They are so wrapped up in their bible, guns, saving unborn lives (but ditching helmet laws for motocycles) and trying to get one over on the other that I am afraid it will be another 100 years or more before things TRULY change in the south, especially in LA.

I am hanging on and will fight til the end. I know that it will take the Supreme Court of the United States to tell people of this country how to behave, just as it has in the past. I just hope I live long enough to see it!

Straight male (some of you geniuses need to know there are straight folk who reach out to you...but some of you would rather fight alone. That's why you're losing, at the moment.) from LA...good blog, once again. The key to winning this particular battle is defining the language of your protest. Don't let the media define who and what you are. We in LA are proud of our homeboy, and I for one don't mind the slings and arrows of some of you Neanderthals who really don't understand what it takes to win a struggle, in order to support his writing. Keep up the good work, Cody!

It's 1:12 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday ... I've written to ALL the Louisiana State Senators and I'm a third of the way through the House of Representatives. I'm wheelchair-bound and will never travel to Louisiana, but THEY don't need to know that .

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE WRITTEN AT LEAST GOV. BOBBLE-HEAD?

@jay - i am a louisiana lesbian and yes we are aware of what is happening and no we don't like it. we are trying to get others to see our point of view on this but the biggest issue is that louisiana is VERY pro-life. ppl see this bill as a way for that pro-life stance to be implimented not as a way to hurt lgbt. so don't judge and don't be obstinate.

Y'all are preaching to the choir.

Go to

http://www.louisiana.gov/

and BOMBARD Gov. Bobble-Head and EVERY SINGLE MEMBER of the Louisiana Legislature with protest letters, e-mails, and faxes.

THEN go to

http://www.2chambers.com/louisiana_state_visitor_bureau.htm

and PROMISE them a BOYCOTT of their state.

THAT'S how it's done.

I use to work at an Office Depot in Ft. Lauderdale years ago. I worked in the copy center. As many of you know; that area has a few bars for the LGBT community. I would make the copies of a "newspaper" for a bar known as Jackhammers. Inside was nudity, but I NEVER let any children see the copies (I even put blank cover sheets on the outside and seal them up in shrink wrap. One day an assistant manager saw what I was copying. He told me that he found it objectionable and wanted me to stop making the copies. I told him that since it is printed for adults by adults that I didn't find it so, but that the copies for the religious not so right nuts that I make copies for - I DID. So I told him that if I have to stop making the copies for one group then I will stop making copies for the other group on the same grounds. He told me that he would get back to me after talking to corporate. He never did. So what is good for the goose is good for the gander is what I am saying. This law could very well work against them also. Which I would love to see happen as long as nobody gets hurt in the process.
