Campaigning While Female

Two articles caught my eye today. One, from the New York Times, noted that Hillary’s eyes welled up on the trail, when she was asked by a group of women how she “soldiered on.”

The other came from the New York Post, which posits that, much like Bill Clinton was called our “first black president” Barack Obama could be considered (if he won) to be our “first woman president.”

The Post op-ed piece says:

“Yet it’s not only Obama’s policies and strategies that appeal to women. He is like a woman: slim, good looking, with long elegant fingers, appealingly dressed – all terms more typically ascribed to female candidates .”

The Post then goes on to say that women aren’t sexually attracted to Barack – they want to join his book club.

But the Post has misspoken, yes? Because what they are saying, really, is that Barack would be our first GAY president. Barack is a metrosexual.

In the Post’s world, Barack’s femininity is just fine (only because he isn’t actually gay. If he was gay, it would be a different story). But Hillary’s masculinity? That’s not OK. Her campaign has been worried all along that a woman would be seen as too weak to run the country – so she’s mostly shown her tough side.

The Post lauds Barack as “a compelling blend of masculine and feminine.” But isn’t that what Hillary is showing us, too, from the opposite side?

The Hillary who spoke at today’s roundtable is the Hillary that many of her friends and associates know. In a husky voice, with tears in her eyes, she said,

It’s not easy, it’s not easy. I couldn’t do it if I did not passionately believe it was the right thing to do. It’s very personal to me. I have so many ideas for this country, I just don’t want to see us fall backwards. It’s about our country, it’s about our kids’ futures.”

I wonder what the reaction is going to be now that Hillary has let her guard down a little bit. Will she get slapped for letting her humanness leak through? Or will she be seen as warmer?

That’s a fantastic and very, very true insight.
