Anchorage Mayor Vetoes Discrimination Ban

By Ali Davis, Contributing writer 08.19.2009 6:51pm EDT

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan (R) has vetoed a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation. His honor does not believe that such discrimination really exists, and thus does not think a ban is appropriate.

The Anchorage Assembly approved the ban 7-4, one vote short of being able to override a veto.

    • got to love Republicans! They have their heads in the sand and their asses in the air! You can’t hear them yell when you plow their asses for all the dirt around their heads! If you don’t ever count crimes or violations of rights, there must not be any! Unless your talking men having sex in beach bathrooms. Then you can’t find the violations to support the claims!

    • While I’m not much for unnecessary laws, if you truly believe such discrimination doesn’t exist then where is the harm in banning it.

Personally, I know the conservatives in my life during the W years were the ones telling me not to be bothered by things like illegal wire tapping because if I wasn’t doing anything illegal I didn’t have anything to worry about.

    • It’s scary that the GOP is so collectively fixated on gays that they really don’t care about anything else. The party is hell-bent on every petty gesture it can manage to stick it to gays. As much as the Dems are half-assed and confused, the GOP is just pathologically obsessed with gays. The party has managed to discredit itself, and it’s all because the cultural conservatives would rather destroy the party they hijacked instead of laying off their homophobia. They can’t get any more traction on abortion, so this is their best shot at martyrdom. They’re just like the imams in Iran.

    • Where are the GOP supporters on this site to spin this one. They are quick and anxious to shout down Obama but when it comes to their own party there is silence.

      Where are the HYPOCRITES?

    • This is, yet, another example of harm, that the Republicans have done to the gay community, ever since the Republican Party has been hijacked by the religious far right…Shame on the Major!!!

    • They can vote next week to override the veto.

    • This is just so absurd…I don’t even know what to say about it.

    • Wait, such discrimination doesnn’t really exist? Wow. Alaska must be a bastion of progressive tolerance!

    • It’s funny. The government told me that I had nothing to worry about with illegal tapping of my phone so long as I wasn’t doing anything illegal.

So perhaps, if the discrimination isn’t happening in the first place, there’s no need to worry about the ramifications of passing it so long as you’re not doing anything discriminatory?

      Hmmmm.

    • Everyone that reads this should contact Mayor Dan Sullivan (https://www.muni.org/soundoff/pages/default.aspx) and let him know that we will boycott his fair city because of his hateful actions. Everytime something like this happens, we need to call, write or e-mail these people to let them know that we are here, we are not going anywhere, and there are consequences to their actions.

    • Mayor Sullivan does not believe discrimination actually exists. I recall that was exactly the same view held by those who opposed civil rights protections for racial minorities and ending segregation.

    • between palin and this idiot it makes you wonder about what is in the water up there.

    • So, if there are no sexual orientation protections in Anchorage, does that mean that straight people can get discriminated against because of their sexual orientation? I guess that’s what that means!

    • While I would like to see Alaska someday, I’m holding off because frankly, I’m concerned about Alaskans. They appear to be mentally unstable and academically inferior. Suppose I could make a game counting all the extra thumbs on the inhabitants.

    • Quote “This ordinance was going to force small-business owners particularly to accommodate people who choose a certain lifestyle,” said the Rev. Jerry Prevo, pastor of the Anchorage Baptist Temple and a leader of the measure’s opponents.

“Once you give special rights to homosexuals,” Mr. Prevo said, “then the next step is you legalize homosexual marriage and so forth.” /quote

And so fourth, yes that’s exactly the plan. I can’t believe these types of people actually still say stuff like this. It’s like they have already abdicated from the union. Sure we don’t have the majority of states on board, but just to have one and then see the opposite side standing so far back from where we should all already be just seems ludicrous. Anti-discrimination legality should be already done across the board. Screw the mayor, screw their county, screw Alaska. They should be following the lead of the rest of the country. Oh those poor Christians and their lousy inability to keep their beliefs systems out of their business ventures. Can you imagine the sign at the door “For Heterosexuals Only”
