Withers: Caroline Kennedy as senator?

I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy. Unlike a few of her cousins, she has kept her picture off the tabloids. From all accounts she keeps her own counsel and is one of those who knows the use of silence, a rather refreshing trait in a media culture that peddles the loud.

With that said, I’m not sure she should be picked to replace Hillary Clinton as New York’s junior senator. Sure there is the delicious irony of Kennedy, who worked hard to get Barack Obama elected, taking Clinton’s spot (it’s time I got over my issues with a certain type of Clintonista), but irony can only do so much.

Despite all the skills she brings to the table, her last name worries me. Do we need another Kennedy in the Senate? Didn’t New York have a Kennedy as senator back in the day? Are political dynasties a good thing?

Sure the rhetoric of democracy and its realities lived on the ground (we are all created equal but some are more equal than others) never match. Those vagaries can be lived with but it doesn’t mean political power should be handed over to families.

    • Having another high profile Senator who does fully supports marriage for gays and lesbians (unlike Clinton and Obama) would be a great asset! Here’s to Caroline Kennedy for Senate!

    • Chris, how’s this for rambling.

Pull up how many times Caroline has voted since registering in New York. If New York wants a Senator to represent them that can not even vote in 50% of the elections, more power to them.

    • Ted Kennedy was the lion of the Senate for gay rights for a very long time. Maybe some of that has not be lost on Caroline? Let’s see what unfolds before she judge her pro or con just because of her last name and because of what clan she belonged to.

    • I guess Whithers forgets all the tough work the Kennedy’s did for blacks in the 1960’s and into the present. Well, what can one expect I guess? They forget the support the gay community gives them too.

    • The bottom line is that James did not give any GOOD reason not to support her. (Trace always offers non-sensical ramblings anyway).

Let’s hear some REAL, GOOD reasons to support or not support her. Emoting is a poor substitute.

    • Eddie,

“Whithers just hates her because she’s white.”

:-) My day was lousy but after reading that howler you made it much better. Thanks much! :-)

      Sincerely,

      James

    • The entire Kennedy family has supported us for YEARS. Whithers just hates her because she’s white.

  • Eddie Said: December 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
    • Whithers can’t stand her because she’s too white.

    • Does anyone know what her political views are on any of the issues? How can people be so quick to give their support before they know where she stands?

  • Trace Said: December 18th, 2008 at 6:05 am
    • Well heck! It’s not like she’s gonna drive off a bridge and leave her passenger to drown is she?

      Ahhhh, that good Kennedy name.
