“The likes of Newton and MLK are spinning in their graves at the trifling n*ggers blacks have become.”

Yes I do insist. MLK and Huey Newton were supporters of gay rights and used to challenge black ignorance, black apathy and black bougieness at every chance. If they had lived to see what the black community has become today, with all it's mega churches, homophobic politics and bling-bling I know for a fact that they'd say the same thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYggWJZZSw8 I think this sums up the black community quite well.

Sorry, James, that's not a response. That's an outline. Let me know when you have a serious answer, because right now, youre just repeating the same shallow points over and over.

radical realist- i'm an angry black person who doesn't job and i'm quoting malcolm x and the black panthers?!? just like a BRAINDEAD white racist to jump to the easiest conclusion about a black person who refuses to take your sh*t. why don't you worry about not referencing david duke, rush limbaugh, and jesse helms because if you didn't notice, they hate your ass too. and whats more uneducated and just plain idiotic than than dogsh*t your racist a*s has been dropping all over this website like:

No,this breach is not going to be repaired if blacks continue to sit around on their lazy asses blindly following irrational dogma.
Why, pray tell, do you always place the responsibility of education and mind/heart changing on LGBT people? In my own black family, I see laziness, stupidity, and unwillingness to open up a damn book besides the silly, retarded bible. Is that behavior the “white devil’s” fault? Are there KKK members standing guard outside of public libraries making sure no black people can enter? Is this aversion to self-education the gays’ fault? Is the very existence of LGBT people in the world too crippling that it forces black people to hide in their homes with their eyes shut, clinging to the bible?

Just because I can spell properly does not mean I am white. Apparently, that’s the way it is where you come from though.

dude NOBODY BELIEVES THAT YOU'RE BLACK, partially or otherwise. so stop lying you f**king idiot. there's nothing more pathetic than encountering a racist on website who pretends to be a person of color to give more credence to their racism. LMAO, hey while you're masquerading as black person why don't you give bud burgoon-clark the apology he SO DESPERATELY feels he deserves? you f**king jacka*s.

Attempts at making "coalitions" with blacks have failed miserably and it hasn't been the fault of Gays. When the black community refuses to even acknowledge the similarities between the discrimination they once faced and the discrimination Gays face, then there's just no starting point to depart from. No coalitions can be made with that premise. One only hopes that more Latinos become more aware that they are not exempt from black homophobia and violence as Jose Sucuzhanay's recent murder in Brooklyn by four black homophobes show.

Reading the comments block was painful to say the least. It was divisive, and the blame game appears to be the norm. This has only filled me with despair - with little hope for where will go from here.

Race and Prop 8.

You are apparently tired of talking about it. Well guess what tough sh*t. Gay and lesbian people, both white and of color, are victims of black homophobia. Gay and lesbian people, who are often extremely supportive of (black)civil rights are more often than not targets of both violent and not so violent homophobia originating within the black community. And gay and lesbian people are NOT to blame for this.

In New Orleans I knew a very small few of gay people who harbored racist attitudes. It's safe to say that I confronted them, and if they persisted in such, I dropped them without a moment's hesitation. However by the same token, I have known many black people, religious and not, who have harbored homophobia and I treat them with the same disdain.

Also, Black Democrats are can't be pigeonholed into one sub-category or another. While a good number of black Democratic voters fall into the Big Government Conservative category, much like white evangelicals. There are plenty of black voters who are church going, believe in activist government yet are secular in their politics. Also, gays and lesbians, due to our experience of abuse and oppression by religious groups, tend to be FAR more secular, but this doesn't mean we're all of the same stripe. Not by a long shot. There are faith based gay voters, who like Jimmy Carter, believe in human rights, ecology and social gospel but who oppose abortion. There are A LOT of socially liberal, fiscally conservative gay male voters who identify much more with the GOP, yet vote for Democrats on social issues(ie gay rights, pro-choice).

Why is it, that gay and lesbian Americans have to hold black voters to some lower standard than the average white voter? Why should black homophobes be able to get away with homophobia, sexism and bigotry in general while we're supposed to protest against the Mormons? Why is it that homophobic blacks get to scream "racism" and play victim when they've commited crimes, such as voting for Prop 8? Mormons, Catholics and Blacks are NOT victims of bigotry, they're guilty of it.

With the election of President Obama, it's time for blacks to drop the eternal victim act. If the son of a Kenyan immigrant can become the President of the US, then black Americans need to stop acting like neanderthals and do something with their lives and communities. Instead black people, much like poor racist whites have done to them, look to scapegoat other groups for their community's issues. Blacks often attack Latinos for taking away their jobs, Blacks resent and often attack gays because we're more oppressed then they are, yet we succeed despite greater adversity, often move into dilapidated ghettos and fix them up, pricing them out. Blacks scream "gentrification" just as fast as whites used to pass covenants to keep non-whites out of their neighborhoods and subdivisions.

There was a time, when black radicals, such as the Black Panthers, openly embraced feminists, queers and others to fight our common enemy of oppression. It was the likes of Angela Davis, Huey P Newton and Eldridge Cleaver who incited not only black resistance to tyranny, but gay resistance as well. Yet black people of today have become either too bougie, too self absorbed, too ghetto fabulous or just plain idiots. The likes of Newton and MLK are spinning in their graves at the trifling n*ggers blacks have become. And the last people who should be begging and teaching black people how not to be like the bigots who kept them down, are gay people. The gay and lesbian movement has been building bridges with a black community who felt they didn't have to share their civil rights. Well, maybe if they feel that way, then since the Constitution was written by white men, maybe it doesn't apply to them.

I don't really think that there is as much a divide as we believe there is. Many people are both, black and gay. White gay men need to be reminded as much as black heterosexuals, that people of color are queer too. Its a weakness of the gay community that we haven't brought forth groups like the National Black Justice Coalition long before things like Prop 8. I look forward to a renewed activism from the queer community, but until we address the underlying assumptions of youth focus and white privilege inherent in the representations of queerness in the media. Until we do so, Middle America is going to believe that what we are asking for is nothing other than "special rights" when all we are asking for equal access to basic civil rights.
