Withers: Prop 8, race, and an apology that is never going to come
A number of you might need to replace tomorrow’s turkey with crow.
After the Proposition 8 vote, a whole lot of folk played the “black homophobia is the reason why gays can’t get married in California” tune. You read that all over the place and if you had the nerve to suggest things were more complicated than that, then the ditty “stop making excuses for black homophobia” was put in the i-Tunes mix.
Hopefully those who grooved to both of those songs (morning Dan Savage), and pointed with furious anger to the CNN exit poll showing that 70 percent of black California voters voted yes on Prop 8, will now humbly apologize. I would prefer if you ate crow breast. New numbers done by political analyst David Binder–they’ve not been released yet–show the black support for Prop 8 to have been 57 percent. [UPDATE: 365gay.com reader Wayne pointed out that Binder been polling for Barack Obama for the past two years.]
I’ll say this right now before moving on: 57 percent is way too high and black folk are going to have to address our homophobia. To repeat and I’ll put it in italics for emphasis: 57 percent is way too high and black folk are going to have to address our homophobia. Anyone who leaves a “stop making excuses” comment needs to sign up for RIF.
And you know what? That 57 percent could have been reduced if the folk running the anti-Proposition 8 team actually had a plan for minority outreach. They didn’t. But why do that right? Much easier to lose the battle then cling to numbers that aren’t related to what happened.

There *IS* no more racism anywhere(sic) … Except perhaps here:

since when is anything Fox News says right?
You are out of your mind. Apologise to ME for having the audacity to write such filth.
I have to agree with the other commenters. Asking for an apology to a community that, according to both exit polls and Binder’s yet-unreleased, voted to strip me of a right in greater numbers than any other minority is insulting.
Maybe you ought spend your time fighting black homophobia instead of writing insulting counter-racist calls for apology.
I have no more remorse for 57% than I do for 69-70%. The black vote didn’t cause our loss, but it certainly didn’t help, either.
James, I’ll ask again. Why should gays apologize to African Americans when African Americans voted to pass Prop 8 in higher percentages than ANY OTHER ETHNIC GROUP in California? (and that’s even using these “unreleased” and unverified new numbers). Where is their apology to us? And when can we expect to see more articles from you that speak out against the pervasive homophobia in the African American community instead of these continuous posts trying to extract an apology for one of the very communities that should be apologizing to us? They voted to take our rights away, not the other way around. Remember?

Wayne,
“When will they be released, and more importantly, when will the new numbers be verified as factual?”
When this happens I will post a link.
“Let me get this straight, gays are supposed to apologize to the African American community because African Americans supported the passage of Prop 8 in higher percentages than ANY OTHER ethnic group?!”
Please read the post. Here is what I said:

Let me get this straight. Gays are supposed to apologize to the African American community because African Americans supported the passage of Prop 8 in higher percentages than ANY OTHER ethnic group?! Aren’t they the ones who should be making an apology to us?
Binders new numbers reek more of political correctness than of accuracy. Now that some very few and I emphasize the words some very few gays are actually taking to task black evangelicals for their hateful vote, David Binders comes up with some new figures. Even if he did legitimately question blacks about their vote couldn’t they just be giving him false answers now because of the backlash they’re are seeing. It’s funny how the polls always seem to be accurate when it’s something favorable for some selected few, but when they show something unfavorable they need to be discredited and changed at all cost. Untouchability for the majority of blacks who voted for this seems to be what’s at the core of Binders new number no matter how some parse it and present it now. James Withers, more than seeking for a non-justified apology don’t you think that you should be seeking to educate your people more about your life and the hurt and anguish they are causing gays and lesbians on the ballot box. Or do you just want to join ranks with the likes of Jasmyne Cannick and see gays and lesbians “crow breast”.

When I click on the term 57 percent, the link just brings me to the source article which states that the numbers haven’t been released yet. When will they be released, and more importantly, when will the new numbers be verified as factual?
Keith,
“Then how did you get this fact?”
Click on the term 57 percent in the article.
Sincerely,
James
“New numbers done by political analyst David Binder–they’ve not been released yet–show the black support for Prop 8 to have been 57 percent.”
Have not been released yet? Then how did you get this fact? The next question is was this research done just because he wanted to? I would like to see more facts about how it was done, where the data came from, and some other questions.
Love, doesn’t come in a color or a form, neither does bigotry nor hate.
If I had the financial means, I would have every minor and major religious figures who spews hate toward gays investigated by a P.I.
I would find every bit of dirty laundry I possibly could.
I would expose, no pun intended, all their misdeeds, speaking as one who was abused as a young teen by them.
This morning the supreme court ruled that the Vatican can now be sued for sexual abuse.
I would not only expose them but break their bank.
The amount of money they spent on taking away the rights of a minority, would have been more Christian and better spent helping people who are in need, hungry, without shelter, etc. instead they used this money for hatred and suppression.
I for one know my enemy, and the only way to defeat them is to break the bank.
I encourage any and all people who have been victimized by any person in any religious institution to come forward and start breaking the bank.
