Withers: Keep Lieberman closer
I love The Godfather trilogy (except for the last one which was rather weak). Ask to give a pet theory for each one and you’ll be in trouble because I’ll yammer until one of us passes out. Chew on my favorite one: the experience of Tom Hagen, the family’s adopted brother and trusted lawyer, mirrors the history of black Americans.
In Godfather II Michael Corleone, a man whose heart is so dank he kills his older brother, utters a line that will go down in film history: Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.
If Senate Democrats were asking, I would keep Senator Joe Lieberman inside the circle. Yes he has no honor and carried water like a love-sick child for John McCain. But he’s easier to control, and watch, if he stays as head of the Senate’s Homeland Security committee.
PS: RIP Miriam Makeba.

Lieberman showed his true self-serving nature in the Connecticut Senate race. He lost the Democratic primary, so he ran and won as an independent. That wouldn’t be such a big deal, except he’d previously been VP candidate as a Dem, and had run for Presidency as a Dem before losing and throwing his support behind other Dems. I agree with keeping him in the fold–that’s the best way to monitor and control his snaky, self-serving ways. He’ll never be President, and it’s good to keep him reminded that his power will never match either his ambition or his ego.
