Don’t you just love political hysteria? Joe [the plumber] Wurzelbacher says a Barack Obama White House will mean the end of Israel, but when pressed he really can’t give any facts. Now we have Georgia representative Paul Broun comparing Obama to Hitler.
“We can’t be lulled into complacency,” Broun said. “You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing [Obama] to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential.”
I’m not saying he’s Hitler but he is. A request to all political junkies, no matter what side: let’s put a 200 year prohibition on comparing our political enemies to Nazis or Fascists.
And in an interesting intersection of comment threads and reality: A group of Holocaust survivors have just went public that they are cutting off any more talks with the Mormon Church over their refusal to stop the Mormon practice of “Baptisms” of dead Jewish Holocaust victims in which their souls are supposedly converted from Judaism into the LDS faith. (creepy)

Nor did I say there was a “strong comparison” I said the “similarities” made me nervous. As you yourself noted, “The Nazis’ success was largely due to a greatly dysfunctional economy”, you may not think it’s a “strong comparison” but our economy is tanking, animosity towards gay people has been evident for generations in America, and now our rights are being legislated away by the majority. The level of hatred against gays is not the same as it was as compared to the Nazi’s hatred of the Jews in pre war Germany, but it’s hard to deny that some disturbing “similarities” exist.

The Nazis’ success was largely due to a greatly dysfunctional economy in the Weimar Republic and the fact that there was already considerable animosity towards Jews throughout Europe anyway.
Yes, there is some animosity towards gay people in the US, but it is nowhere near the extent to which there was animosity towards the Jews. There was a little less than 2000 years of a history of bad blood weighing down fruitful German Christian-Jewish relations that doesn’t exist in this case.
And just in case you plan on saying that the US economy is dysfunctional and that there is a parallel to be made there, we’re not observing inflation in the thousands of percent in the US, people can still buy food at stores and we don’t have half our population unemployed.
By the way, per Godwin’s Law, you (and the Georgia politician) automatically lose the discussion.

Sadly, Hitler did begin his masacre against the Jews by first demonizing them, then he took their rights and equality away, then he took their property away, and then he took their lives away.
Today in America, Gays have been demonized and are now in the process of having our rights and equality denied. I’m a student of history, and I have to say, the similarites are starting to make me nervous.

Racism dies hard in the south, doesn’t it. Of course it is encouraged by the Bush administration and the so called Christian Right, the same bigot maggots who gave us the civil war, segregation, and of course now they have a new group to hate in the name of their “gOD of hate – gay people.
Let’s all pray that this guys kids are all gay, and those that are not bed down with black folks, especially his daughters or grandaughters.
And lets pass a hate crimes law, including hate speech. Put these f#@kers behind bars, where they can be the boys for the ordinary decent criminals. That would be justice.
And his wife run off with a black man.
We need our elected officials to be working together, not spreading fear and rumors about each other.
