Withers: Being bold when it comes to HIV prevention

When it comes to HIV, AIDS, and communities of color the news is always bleak. To break that cycle a new study, focusing in the Bronx and Washington, DC, will attempt to test and treat every adult.
Surprisingly, or not, this new study isn’t about slowing the virus. Instead the survey will examine if a test and treat program can be carried out here—testing and treating is much more common in the developing world.
One of the reasons why this is being considered is because in some communities people fall through the cracks when it comes to HIV treatment, whether it’s getting tested or getting connected with drugs if needed. Apparently in DC in 2006, about half of residents with a recent HIV diagnosis sought out a physician about it within six months. In New York City, the Bronx has the highest rate of AIDS deaths, even though Manhattan has a larger rate of cases. This discrepancy is due to a delay in treatment.
There are multiple reasons why people wait to seek out medical care. Fear. Concern of what families and friends will say. A stubborn trend to be dismissive of traditional medicine. A sense that HIV and AIDS is a disease of the other. I still marvel at talking to a preacher, about 9 years back, who went into the history of AIDS. According to his rendering AIDS was created in a federal lab, spread to gay men as a way to rid the world of homosexuality.
“Thank goodness the virus hasn’t hit the black community yet,” he said.
Hopefully that man of faith joined the reality based world, but as the numbers show too many are not there yet.

If people are still going out and barebacking with their lover, wife, husband,bf/gf, gay, straight, bi friends, then they’re are just putting a down payment on a suicide gun. AIDS/HIV is not a fun disease, it changes your body, globs of fat, and makes your tryglicerides rise to the roof.
James if in 2000 his speech consisted of “Thank goodness the virus hasn’t hit the black community yet,”….he probably still doesn’t think it has, and yet there is widespread proof that the Black community is the largest carrier/spreader of the disease whether through IV drug use, or the closet cases “Im not gay, I just bang dudes and then go home and bang my wife” mentality.
Sad, but true. It would be interesting to watch this pastor or whatever go to an AIDS hospice and have a one on one with some patients there for a day. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t do anything at the moment but mortify him, but maybe soon he would think about all those “straight” black men in there who “Thank goodness, hasn’t hit them yet”.
I think it’s highly possible HIV/AIDS was created out of some form of terrorism, but I do not believe it is a modern day US-genocide weapon. I will admit if Im proven wrong…but really? Wouldn’t the US have just taken over Germany for a few months and re-start the chambers? Or make our own…we have lots of land. Would have been easier to contain.
Who do you think created HIV/AIDS?
At any rate. To anyone and everyone who believes they are invinceable are just down right the dumbest shit on the earth and should be locked up on the grounds of ignorance and the potential to be a mass-murderer. You are not immortal. No Glove-No Love. Plain and simple. Wrap it up dummies…
